m.2 drive comparison

So obviously the 950 EVO appears to be the drive to get, and the price has dropped quite a bit. However, I see numerous other brands/models available at various price points. I haven't been keeping up with hardware changes, and while I am already running a SATA SSD, the new motherboard I ordered has an m.2 slot so I've been trying to do a little reading and comparison.

Can anyone supply an article or two which references the comparison between the two types of SSD's? And a comparison between the various m.2 drives currently available?

Any other info or feedback is welcome as well.

There are two types of m.2 drives. One is just a regular SATA drive on a stick and wouldn't show any difference between their 2.5" cousins. The other uses PCIe lanes directly and have much higher perfomance. However, only a few drives use 4x PCIe 3.0 lanes, the rest use 2x PCIe 2.0 lanes.

What is this "950 EVO"? All I know about is the "950 PRO". Got a link?

Also, real world performance improvement is marginal for most things, except benchmarks. Doesn't seem worth it for the price right now. Plus the overheating/throttling problems people are having due to M.2 slot placement make it less enticing. But if you like to have the "best" of what is out right now, don't need more than 512GB, have money to spend and good cooling near the M.2 slot, then absolutely go for it.

Sorry, 950 PRO ( Samsung 950 PRO [Official Thread] ). Like I said, this is all new to me, so I'm trying to catch up.

So basically, what I'm hearing, is that unless I know it will stay cool and/or I just have money to burn, just stick with a standard SATA SSD model.

Say what you will, but all I know is that my current rig is way faster at everything than any other one I have owned to date....

I do alot of database, photoshop, pdf, audio and video work, so if that's not "real world" usage, I don't know what is.....

it helps and really really helps depending on what you do. But it is paramount that it gets direct air flow!!!! I can not stress that enough and its a bit of a pain to get working on some systems.

If you read that thread you read my posts on what the 950 PRO helps with so I wont repeat myself.

I'm curious, what MoBo do you have? I just purchased the Asus x99 3.1/USB MoBo, and I've been looking into using the m.2 PCI slot express card that comes with it.

I just purchased the asrock fatal1ty z170 gaming k4. It's my first ASRock purchase, so I'm hoping I won't be disappointed. I've used several Asus boards in the past, and a few other brands as well.

Currently sitting in my closet awaiting installation. I was just working out what to do for the OS drive.
