I have a spare PC (PII, 10 gig HD, etc) and an empty fish tank (bad combo!). I am wanting to submerge the PC in a fish tank filled with liquid. Here is what i was thinking

- Getting a standard liquid pump to get the liquid moving and force the liquid out over the mobo rather than using fans.

- Using a standard fish tank but sealing the top off, using sealant where possable around and cables going externally

What i really want to know is;

- Can we submerge the Hard Drive (dont think so, but had to ask anyway)
- What liquid is recommended? I have been looking at several such as mineral oil (preferred but expensive!), vegetable oil (wont this deteriorate and "rot" or smell?) or other specialty liquid (again, expensive!). Mainly looking for something clear, thin, odourless and does not conduct electricity (obviously).

Any suggestions? We have about a $30 budget

Deionized water doesn't conduct electricity, you might try that. If you could somehow pump all the Oxygen out of the tank you would be good to go with just deionized water.

DI water will not be DI for very long in a system with metals, plastics and the like in it. This is an incredibly bad suggestion.

DI water would be the cheapest way to go. But if you are going to do it do it right. Get yourself a zinc anode and make sure it is in the water with it. Also you will need 3 types of filters .45 micron , a MIXED bed and a oxygen filter. With all that it will be good to go. I know this because right now i am setting next to one of the biggest DI water coolers in the USA :D
