Hello, I’ve got a coworker that has an HP pavilion ZV5000 with what I am diagnosing as a backlight issue. The laptop turns on fine and runs great but the only thing you can barely, barely see on the laptop screen is any areas of the desktop that are white. In a dark room there is no light given off by the screen.

I just wanted to get the [H]’s opinion as he is somewhat weary of my diagnosis.

That’s all and thanks in advance.

It's either the backlight or the inverter, nine times out of ten it's the backlight.

That's what I told him, he said he was going to trash it or take it to BB. BB will RAPE him if he takes it there. I figure I'll give the CCFL mod trick a shot, and if that doesn't work he can still buy a new screen and pay far less then BB would charge him.

It isn't worth taking to BB to have them replace the LCD in all reality, by the time they're done I'd be surprised if they do it for under $500, not cost effective at all IMO. In fact sending it back to HP to have it repaired would probably be about the same price and you'd have a real tech doing the repair.

For around $20 you can replace the CCFL in the back of the LCD, challenging and hard to do right though.

For about $400 you can buy a new LCD and do it yourself.

Well I replaced the bulb and there is still no backlight. So I am guessing it is has to be the invertor.
