LSI RAID controller BBU charge times

Folks,

I just got a an IBM ServerRAID M5015 with a BBU that I flashed to a 9260-i8. Upon initial boot, the LSI BIOS complained that no battery was detected which could be due to it being fully discharged and requiring a minimum of 30 minutes to charge. The WebBIOS stated "none" for battery backup.

I let it sit for about a hour but after a reboot, still nothing. At the moment it is sitting at work in a box that is powered up and idling In the WebBIOS... The seller on eBay claimed everything was tested but it does have a 30 day warranty.

Questions I have:

1. What is the nominal voltage on these? About a hour after charging it, I took it out and measured 2.4 volts or so... Then plugged it back in to keep charging.

2. How long does it take to fully charge a battery from complete dead?

3. Does it charge whenever a computer is on, or does the LSI BIOS have to go beyond a certain point to start charging?

4. What's the life expectancy of these BBUs?

First off, ensure you have the latest firmware. There have been firmware bugs which cause the controller to improperly report battery status. (Known issues are fixed now)

1: Mine are reading slightly under 4 volts.

2: Not sure, but as an example, a battery relearn cycle takes ~2 hours and after that the battery recharges in ~30 min.

3: As long as the controller is initialized it should be charging.

4: They last for a few years, 3+ is not unusual if environment is sane.

If firmware, battery, battery cable/connector, etc are all good, your controller could have a damaged charge circuit. (I've seen that happen on 8888elp cards, haven't seen any damaged 9260s)

Most likely the battery is just bad. Give it 24 hours, it may come back to life.

I let it sit overnight (around 16 hours) - no dice. Took the battery out to measure voltage and it appears to be hovering at 2.5v if I measure directly from the terminals or 2.3v if I measure using the little harness :(

I am running firmware 12.12.10X and I think the latest one is 12.14.0167 or something... I'll try to update to the latest version and see whats up. Meanwhile it's still sitting in the box for another few hours; I'll do the 24 hour test but looks like I'd have to RMA the card :(

Updated to the latest firmward - no dice. Called LSI and they said "battery is toast"

Bah :(
