LSI 9260 does SATA 6Gb/s and multi-array performance?

Hi,

does the LSI MegaRaid 9260-8i provide full compatibilty to SATA 6Gb/s on all 8 ports?

In some product descriptions I do see a mix auf SATA 3Gb/s and SAS 6Gb/s only, but according to their website it should have SATA 6Gb/s as well.

My second concern is with the performance of LSI 9260-8i when it has to deal with multiple array setup. The plan is to set up an Raid5 consisting of 6 Harddisks and Raid 0 with 2 SSD's.
Will the speed drop down significantly compared to a single array? I'm wondering because of only 1 RoC installed on 9260-8i. The 9265 and later have two of them on board.

The 9260 series cards are great.

I have the 9260-4i card in my beast.

I believe what you are reading is that is supports 3Gb/s (SATA2) and 6Gbs/s (SATA3) SATA and SAS drives as well as SSD's.

This just means it is backwards compatible to SATA2. If you run a SATA 3 drive it will run at 6Gb/s.

It will support SATA 3 6Gb/s on all 8 internal ports, or up to 128 Disks as long as your SAS Expanders also support SATA 3 6Gb/s.

The 9260 vs 9265 there is a noticeable difference in performance. the 9265 is the 2nd generation of the 9260 to put it simply.

I love my 9260-4i, it performs quite well.

I run 3 x 3TB Seagate Baracuda's in raid 5, so I have room to add 1 more disk once I get near capacity.

In my case I would have to purchase a SAS Expander to add in more disks once I reach 4, however, I may decide on a newer faster controller instead that has 8 connectors internal.

I'll likely make the jump to either the 9270 or 9271 series when I need to make that decision.

You shouldn't see a performance problem running that few disks in your scenario.

Depending on your budget, I would probably go for the 2nd Generation card (9265). I'd actually look more at the 9270/9271 series cards since they all support PCIe 3.0 and should provide an overall better experience.

The 9270/9271 are also Dual-Core ROC's.

One thing I will recommend, get the Battery Module for the card. You'll be running your raid(s) with Write Through Mode and Caching will be disabled without one. There is a noticeable performance benefit as well as data protection benefit to having this.

Fastpath is something that interests me but I believe it only affects SSD's on these cards. I need to research this some more, but I think it may benefit you to get a key for this since it looks like your putting some SSD's on the raid card.

My main rig sits in a Corsair Obsidian 800D, this comes with a handy 4 disk enclosure with a SATA Backplane. I've been running my Raid card and drives utilizing this Backplane. I discovered the other day that this Backplane is only SATA2 compliant....

Yet my Raid card and disks are all SATA3... Since both the drives and Raid card are backward compatible it hasn't posed a problem. Other than I now realize my Raid array in my system can and will perform faster once I upgrade the Backplane. LOL

Luckily Corsair offers a SATA3 Backplane upgrade for $10!

This should be in my hands tomorrow.

The backplane is just a double sided plug - cables on one side and drives on the other.

There is no SATA2 or SATA3.

I confirmed what you have corrected me on in the LSI management software by connecting a SATA1 drive to the Backplane.

ah well for $10 I'm not worried about it, I can use for expansion later.
