hey guys having a problem with this card i cant seem to create a raid bigger then 2tb i thought maybe thats the maximum size for a raid on that card any ideas people first person to solve my problem i will donate $50dollars to really need this sorted out

1068e is not a card, it is a controller IC. Try to update the firmware and BIOS to the most recent version.
Please try to provide information in a more useful manner.

It is very unlikely that 2TB is the maximum size. Did you create the RAID in the cards BIOS? Which type of RAID did you create?

thanks for replying the model nummber on the card is sas3082E-r i tried creating the raid in windows using the software that came with it when i press controll c to enter in the bios it comes up saying loading defualt settings then loads into windows

is there a tutorial on how to update the sas bios

So how would SAS handle drives beyond 32-bit LBA? For example the 3TB drives that are already out?

the controller has to support the drive size, period. There are controllers that get around the SCSI 32bit addressing / 2TB volume size, but most of those will be high end controllers and standalone SAN units. The LSI 1068e, being a budget minded IC, is not one of them.

While I understand the argument about the drive size (there are no SAS drives that large, only SATA drives), I thought that this only concerns the communication between the drive and the controller. The communication between controller and host should not be dependent on SAS limitations.

I have two SASUC8i controllers lying around and a bunch of 2 TB drives. I will try it this weekend.

I do not understand your statement. If the SAS controller is not capable of addressing drives over 2TB, or capable or creating volumes from drives that exceed 2TB... and host is getting it's volume information from the RIAD controller, then how could the host possibly have access to any more than the controller can present to it?

and you are correct, there are no SAS native drives over 600GB, currently. They can put a SAS controller board on a SATA drive so that it support the SCSI command set, but this also involves putting different firmware on the drive (usually not a field upgrade, has to be done @ the factory). There are also add-on interposers for SATA that convert the physical connection to SAS, but the drive itself remains SATA, and the controller knows this when it talks to it.

is there a way i can get it to accept larger drives or flash the firmware to use larger drives or is it worth buying another one

wat if i was to use windows home server would it be able to read all the 2tb hdds say not in raid just as single disks

not on that controller

If you can put the controller in a non-RAID disk passthrough mode where it becomes a JBOD controller, then yes. Also, WHS does not support RAID. Your best bet is an HBA, if you intend to go with WHS. I personally recommend the Supermicro AOC-SASLP-MV8 for up to 8 drives SAS or SATA, connected via a PCI-E x4 slot. You'll need SFF8087 to SATA forward breakout cables to connect the drives (card does not come with the cables), or the Supermicro AOC-SAT2-MV8 if you have a PCI-X (do not use this in a regular 32bit 33MHz PCI slot unless you love TERRIBLE performance) slot available. The PCI-X version just uses regular SATA cables (also only supports SATA drives).

ok chees i might look into that card u suggested see if i can get it on ebay thanks heaps
