My father's computer has been acting weird for some time. His slave harddrive will only appear sometimes when he boots his computer. This morning when he turned his computer on, it got to the loading windows screen, but then gave him an error box that said "Insufficient system resources exist to complete the API" He took his computer to a shop a few days ago and the said they cleaned any viruses and spyware he had on it...

I've tried booting into safe mode but that wont work, it still gives me the same error message.

can anyone help?

his system (VERY outdated)
P2 450mhz
10gig HD - master
30gig HD - slave
224mb ram
winxp pro

You should take it back to the shop and tell them it still doesn't work and they need to fix it.

But it sounds like they don't know what they're doing so, eh, catch 22.

First off, make sure it doesn't have viruses or spyware. Then....

Check in Task Manager and see how much physical memory is being used. I'd imagine almost all is being used.

Then check your PF Usage. If that is pegged too, the problem may be a lack of virtual memory.

Go to System Properties > Advanced and under Performance Options click Settings. Then click on the Advanced tab and click Change under Virutal Memory.
-Click Custom size and set the Initial size to 384MB and Maximum to 768MB.

Then reboot, defrag, and reboot again.

See if that helps.

ok, after talking to my dad some more...

he has some serious problems...

he says that the space on his master drive has like 978kb...

then itll jump up a few hundred mb's then drop again to like 8kb...

sounds like a worm to me, but no anti-virus software can find one...

hmmm

Delete/move a gig or two off that drive. Then run chkdsk /r
Once that's done defrag.
Looks like you're running out of space for the page file.
