Low Windows Experience Score with SSD

I'm currently using an Intel X25-V 40GB SSD in my D830.Usually the windows experience score is 7.3 and I'm only getting a 5.9.It's running in AHCI in setup and I have upgraded the firmware and optimized the drive with the Intel SSD toolbox.
 
1. WEI is a horrible benchmark.
2. You have a very small drive (thus it does not do as much internal raid 0)
3. Your drive is 3+ years old (write speeds have increased very much since then with better controllers and more parallelism)
4. Is your drive close to full?
 
Just got windows installed on it.I had to install a regular sata hdd,then put windows on it.Then a had to clone the drive using macrium reflect.Reason I had to was the Dell D830 would not recognize the x25-v.

Is the partition aligned for SSDs? What SATA spec does the board/ssd support? etc
 
Did you happen to install the chipset drivers for the os after you swapped tot he ssd?

WEI is 99% about Windows detecting hardware and configuring itself for the hardware in your system and 1% about being a benchmark.

OP, there are some arbitrary caps on WEI scores. The 5.9 is likely due to the drive only being 40GB, even if the performance justifies a higher score.

WEI changes all the time as new hardware comes out. As time passes all your older hardware will progressively get lower.

It's a relative score, not an absolute one. It ranks your system based on what is top of the line currently.
 
I don't have a clue to what chipset you have. But perhaps it is a intel one. You can use this link and it will auto detect it for you and give you links to the drivers you need. Hopefully this will help you out some.

If you go into disk defragmenter, is it set to off for the SSD? Maybe Windows cannot detect that it is an SSD due to being cloned.

Also, WEI measures the primary boot disk.

WEI does not really benchmark well with SSDs. I have had the same experience with WEI and my SSD drives. My system blew others out of the water, but I would have lower WEI scores than theirs simply because WEI doesn't really take into account many of the advantages of SSDs. It is not a real benchmarking tool and I wouldn't worry about it at all.

If you are really interested in benchmarking use something more like 3dmark Vantage, pcmark, SiSoft Sandra, HDTach, HD Tune, ATTO Disk Benchmark, and AS SSD.

If you have your system installed onto the HDD and have a SSD for other stuff, the HDD is going to be scored. The X25-V 40GB should score around 7.4, which is almost maxed (7.9).

One of the reasons I don't like cloning from HDD to SSD or changing from IDE to AHCI after installation is due to things like WEI not liking the change. A clean install of Windows 7 onto an SSD in AHCI mode will give you the best results with WEI. WEI (Windows System Assessment Tool) is used for the OS to configure itself based on your hardware (and as a secodary measure, as a benchmark of system performance in the form of WEI). Things like Windows 7 automatically disabling SuperFetch and Defrag on SSD's are all based on WinSAT results, which are displayed to you in the form of WIE. If the system is not installed correctly from the start, you're doomed for issues with it.

If you have to clone a mechanical drive to make the machine work who knows what you'll get for alignment.

You have an old machine and a small drive but you still need to test with ASSSD.

Microsoft added the 6 and 7 ranks, partially due to SSD's and their improved I/O. They said the test are not specific for SSD's, but that they definitely do account for them. How much more "ssd specific" do you need beyond measuring I/O and disabling features if they are not needed for SSD's?

Earlier, I made note of the fact that our new levels, 6 and 7, were added to recognize the improved experiences one might have with newer hardware, particularly SSDs, graphics adapters, and multi-core processors. With respect to SSDs, the focus of the newer tests is on random I/O rates and their avoidance of the long latency issues noted above. As a note, the tests don’t specifically check to see if the underlying storage device is an SSD or not. We run them no matter the device type and any device capable of sustaining very high random I/O rates will score well.

i cloned my ssd (intel 520 180 gig) and scored a 7.3, i did a fresh install on it last week and now score is 7.7 with the same hardware.
 
MS ditched WEI in 8.1 anyway.
(Either that or it is on hold due to "consumer preview")

Since SSDs operate completely different than common HDDs, there is a lot to measure. There is far more going on than just the 'random I/O' seek which is the only thing WEI checks. Read your source again. Have you ever used drive benching programs before? There is far far more to test than just random I/O, which is why I talked about several other benching programs that will give far more information.
 
In one post you mention an 830 and another mentions a 930.

I guess I'm just confused as to what you did.

The 8 key is located next to the 9 key:D Misprint on my part.I put the SSD in a Desktop and did a clean install,no problems.Just using a HDD in the laptop for now.

Also note that the performance of your SSD will also be judged by its available throughput. If your laptop does not have SATA III available, it could hurt some of the performance.

You'll have that....I do it all the time. :)

I'm kinda surprised no one else noticed.

If I had a little more info on your machine I may be able to help a little more but I can't even find anything on Dell's site.
