low volume problem

Ok I just built a new computer, when I open media to play, with all the volume controls turned all the way up, I am still getting very low volume.

Here is what I have

GIGABYTE GA-K8NS Socket 754 NVIDIA nForce3 250 ATX AMD Motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 2800+ Newcastle Integrated into Chip FSB Socket 754
Polk Audio speakers (2 of them)

This is the first computer I have built, so any help would be appreciated. Still learning. I checked for updates on the driver, but that didnt seem to work either.

Try turning up the main volume control in Windows. It's normally the speaker icon in the system tray, but if there's no icon, then go to the control panel and access the volume control under the "Sounds and Audio Devices" panel.
 
Did you plug the speakers into the right port? Try connecting them to the headphone jack in front (if u have one) and see if they sound similar. Check the back to make sure they aren't in the microphone port. It gives out some sound to run headphones, but not enough for speakers.
 
If you're talking about those grey Polk sattelite speakers, they depend on the source for amplification and have no way to amp themselves (since they dont plug into a power source). Your best bet is to up the windows volume as high as you can, but even then, you're looking at crap sound quality and volume that's still too low.
 
yeah I have the volume maxed out on everything. Yes the plug is in the right port, I made sure and used the gigabyte jack sensing program in there media player, just to make sure. On my old computer which was an HP 1.3 celeron, with on board sound, the speakers got 4x as loud. Thanks for the help so far, but I still have the problem, anything else I might try?

Get a pair of powered speakers. I actually have a set of those Polks from an old HP, so I know exactly what you are talking about. As so_cal_forever said, they depended on the sound card in the HP for their amplification.
 
well now I dont have any sound coming out of the speakers even when I do the test. So I went ahead and order a new sound card and 5.1 setup.
