I have been told by somebody this place would be my God. So I have a real situation and sorry if this is not the right place because at the moment it seems like the best place to put it.

I have a 120 GIg drive and I am getting full errors. Have been for months and each time I would delete stuff and keep going. Now it is time that I must deal with it.

My C drive is filling up and I can't tell why. Of the folders I can account for less than 2 Gigs.

So I made the hidden files unhidden to see what else is going on. This is in C drive, says its empty.

~cevts_001_tmp.dir

I just googled it so I have something to go on.

Lost the first message I tried to post as this so I am recreating it. I believe a relative installed a keylogger type program to watch me. I am about 99% sure this is the case and I know who did it and most likely how. I have BeenPhucked.

What really sucks is that I don't have enough memory to do even the basic of tasks anymore. I need my computer functionality back.

So how do I find what is taking up so much space and get it out of my system?

Good, I am glad that saved though I did a better worded job the first time of it. I also wanted to mention I think I know what might have been recorded. The only thing I do which even deals with near that amount of memory is the HDTV card I installed but the installation was fully on the D drive. Right now it has about 8 Gigs of HDTV files because that is memory intensive.

So I believe the spying program probably mirrored those in the C drive.

cevts makes me think "computer events" for some reason, as if this is some kind of log that's happening and being created on the fly.

My suggestion for the immediate future (like right now as you're reading this if you can) is go to:

http://housecall.trendmicro.com

and run a full system scan, virus and malware, and see if anything out of the ordinary turns up. After that, go get Process Explorer and take a peak at what the hell is going on behind the scenes. It's free and you can find it HERE.

See if anything out of what you might consider the ordinary stuff is running - and it should list EVERYTHING including any key loggers that might be trying to hide themselves.

Just something to get you started...

Right. I do run PeoplePC's internet security program every time it boots up. It scans for viruses and is updated daily.

I did run Microhouse's scan last night and nothing popped up.

In the meantime is there a freeware/shareware program I could use to repartition my HD so I can use some of my D drive space to keep everything running? I'm paying for things like netflix and now I don't even have enough space (under 200 megs) to even use WatchNow.

Matter of fact the trendhouse scan does not even want to run because it needs 300 some mb. I'm down to 100+. I got it working on the D drive but not every program works with a D drive install.

I suppose what I should be looking for is some kind of utlity to tell me how the disk space is being used. With 120 Gigs I thought I had so much space it would never be an issue until I seriously started using the HDTV card and software.

I ran ComboFix and HiJackThis.

GParted is pretty much the recommended freeware utility for drive partitioning nowadays and has a LiveCD version that makes the task easier - as long as you can boot off CD, that is. If not, I'm sure you can get it onto a USB stick - as long as you can boot off a USB stick, that is. There's always floppies, if those options don't work. But then again...

See how deep the rabbit hole goes? :)

Another suggestion is run CrapCleaner. It might be able to wipe all that .tmp file "crap" in one run, there's only one way to find out. It's a pretty awesome program for cleaning house, and yes, it's free also.

Good luck...

I ran crap cleaner and am back up to about 300 megs. Enough to enjoy netflix watchnow again but still at a loss for the 12 Gigs bloatware monster.

yes, the rabbit hole goes deep. I spent a inordinate amount of time backing up things in case the partitioning does not go well. Installing programs and running more scans. Nothing gives a clue as to the 12 Gigs, unfortunately.

I'm not sure what you mean by the CD/floppy issue. You mean generally how old/capable is this computer? Well its a Sony Vaio running 120 GIgs HD, DVD burner, HDTV card, 760 MEGs ram running a pentium 4 at 2.54 Ghz. Not quite brand new anymore but still far from slow and old.

I also made two CDs of the GParted. But I am leary to use it. Been over a decade since I was in college for electronics. Even back then I never had any reason to repartition a system.

I keep forgetting to google stuff. I googled antikeylogger program and a number of free options came up so I suppose I will try them next.

ProcessExplorer is pretty awesome, I especially like the way one can right click and google the process for an english version of what it is and if its risky. Now if I could find something similar for the hard disk and what is going on inside it. I will have to play with it some more.

I usually just start at the C root and start getting properties on all the folders, if you find one thats insanely huge that shouldn't be start digging deeper into that folder. Also sounds dumb but try and run Disk Cleanup that should tell you if any of your missing space is clogged up in Temp internet files, temp files, old office files, etc.

Best places to start looking is C:\Windows\Temp, C:\Documents & Settings\*your login name*\local settings\temp. Also check the temp directory for your other login names under the 'Documents & Settings' folder.

EDIT: If you can get this software installed this will tell you where most of your space is going:

TreeSize Free V2.1

Somebody give that man a cigar!

When I booted up today I got the message that I was critically low in space, 50 MB, and that if more space was not cleared the system restore would not even work properly. Ran disk mgr for a whole 92 laughable K of savings.

I did get that program installed and many thanks because you saved me! I got it installed in D and found the real sizes of the programs much to my surprise. So I moved a bunch of music and vacation video I had of mule deer charging each other and now I have 1.5 Gigs free!

Thanks again!

They were both youngsters practicing their skills for later in life. It was on a trip to the old Holden Village Copper Mine in Wenatchee State Forest in Washington State. The deer aren't like white tailed deer around here, they are literally mule deer. They look like just like regular white tailed deer except they have these huge ears that make them look like elves for Santa's workshop.

Finally got to run trendmicro's scan all the way through and found 8 items, 7 mostly adware, but one spyware keylogger is there. I knew it. I am going to start that for another thread. I have online dating to thanks for tipping me off to its existance!

CCleaner should help with cleaning out some of those programs too.
