I have no experience with these low pro cards but the other half want one for her PC which is one of those slimline types. What's the best 512Mb -1Gb available? Do they need to be plugged into the PSU? If so , I don't think her machine has a 4 or 6 pin available. Will an adapter work fine if needed?
 
Probably a GTS 250 1GB from Sparkle. I think they may have made a GTS 450 low profile as well.

He used to use it for physx but since he just upgraded to GTX 570 sli he decided to pass it down to our little brother and it plays games on lower res excellent. It doesn't use much power and I think it comes with a molex to 6-pin PCI-E adapter.

As far as memory goes it really doesn't make a difference on the newer cards if you got 512mb or 1GB but a nice 5 frames or so depending on the card. The HD4870's two variants are evidence.

I'm sure the psu is is probably 300w or less. It's one of those prefab HP C2D machines. She didn't want one built and now is kind of regretting it since the the lack of performance is starting to show. Native resolution is 1600x900 - 20" widescreen. That 430 looks like a pretty decent card. This machine is the "house" pc and is used mostly for surfing and WOW.

Maybe the MSI low profile 5670? It should be much faster than the GT430 and it does not require 6pin power. I just ordered one for a new build and I will be receiving it in a couple days.
 
Aww look at all these cute little video cards.
Seriously though that's the smallest GTS 250 I've seen in my life. That thing is packing some gaming power, too.

The 5750 from powercolor is definitely the best low profile gaming card out there. there is no question :)

I think the OP would probably be okay with the 5750 low profile. The TPD is only 86W compared the 5670's 64W. It would offer more performance than the 5670.
 
Did a little more investigating last night and this machine only has a 220w psu. AMD 2.7Ghz dual core processor and 4gigs of ram. I'm assuming I need to stay with the least power hungry card I can since it just doesn't have the juice and no way to upgrade the psu. :(

Well, if you want to be safe. I'd suggest the 5670 since it offers more performance than the gt430. I think the system should be fine with at 2.7ghz dual core athlon and the 5670.
