I've considering repurposing my old HTPC hardware (AM2+ Mobo/Phenom II 940 (125w)/4gb DDR2) memory into a NAS, can anyone recommend a good low power CPU replacement to swap into the board to cut down on heat/power usage in a NAS?

Thanks

You could just underclock / undervolt your current chip and possibly disable cores.

if you want to go low power, look at the athlon II x2 250 and undervolt the crap out of it. it will get you well below 45w. another option is the old athlon x2 BEXXXX/XXXXe brisbane processors.

but like dreschrjm said, you could undervolt and underclock the 940. also leave cool 'n quiet on and it should keep the processor pretty close to 45w at idle.

turn off two cores in bios and underclock/undervolt your current chip.

or don't turn off 2 cores and do the same thing, 2 cores would sip power though.

Phenom II supports clock gating, so the cores will sip practically little power if not used, not a big deal. Still, if you don't need them, lower the voltage with them disabled and go passive cooling or something.
