Low Noise PSU?

I am looking to buy a low noise PSU I am thinking either Nexus or SilenX, Any suggestions anyone ? maybe a different brand? or even specific models? I have an athlon 64 3200+ on an Asus A8n-E mobo, 512 megs ram, and a 200 gig hd.

Nexus and SilenX are both OEM Fortron - cheaper to buy an actual Fortron unit. However, for silence, nothing except a fanless unit can touch a Seasonic S12 :)

What else do you plan on running? Depending on the video card, you can probably get away with the Seasonic S12-430.

haha I have the cheapest PCI-E card that I could find asus ati ax300. I could probly run my computer fine on a 300 watt power supply. but even those if you want a very quiet one are quite expensive. oh and seasonic seems to be very expensive, seems to be even more than silenx haha at least when it comes to the lower wattages. Silenx PSU's are much more expensive at the higher end

so anyways I am assuming that I can buy a fortron power supply open it up and stick a low noise fan in there if I want too. the only thing that I am worried about is the heat sinks. Do those big silent computing companies add more heatsinks into the PSU's? because I have seen Silenx PSU's and held them. They weigh like a ton.

Actually, just installing a slower fan is not always a good solution when the fan is a 120MM.

BIG heatsinks actually cause a bit of a restriction when your fan blows DOWN but your vents are off to the sides. Typically, you'll need a more efficient power supply that doesn't require very big heatsinks in the first place, if you're going to install a quieter fan. If you do it, just make sure the fan moves just as much air (CFM) than the original. Sometimes a fan can be quieter simply from the way the tips of the blades are shaped, etc.

PSU's with a pair of 80's is a lot easier to modify because the airflow is straight through. You can get away with next to no CFM's simply because there's little obstruction to the air flow going through the power supply.

So I have the, Thermaltake Silet PurePower TT-420AD(Dual Fan), and it is anything but silent. It didn't bother me much because it used to be in the office, but I have moved and now it's right next to my bed. Any way for me to quiet this thing down? I really don't want to invest much into this PC, I really only check e-mail and the occasional web page in the evenings. I'm sure that it's the Power supply, i have shut down every other fan(for just a minute) and noticed no change in volume. Thanks for the help, sorry to revive the old topic.

on a side note, what does dell use? Those things are literally silent.

go with the seasonic S12, i just replaced my old PSu w/ the seasonic S12 and the only thing that is making noise right now are the case fans. I am now trying to get the case fans w/ 3 pion connectors not the standard molex 4 pin connectors because seasonic included a 3 pin fan connector so i can control the noise level of the fan, plus they i can set it to high or low speed. Thgus using the PSU fan connector would really make the system more silent.

I would just get a PowerMax PSU or Aspire PSU and replace the fan with a Panaflo if I were u.

i don't have 60 bucks to drop right now, i'm looking for a low cost solution, but i guess i don't want to fry my parts, any way to quiet down the current psu? maybe disable the 2nd fan?

I've played with those "Silent" PurePower 420W PSUs from TT... and they run pretty warm, even with all that noise produced. I don't know if there's an easy solution other than to get rid of it. A good PSU doesn't have to be that expensive...
