Hello,
i have strange problem with my NAS running Nexenta 3.1.1
I use it only for exporting iSCSI volumes to my server running ESXi5 and my pc running Windows 7.
So, to the problem.
When copying files from virtual pc on ESXi, i get low speeds, about 35MBps Write speed and 17MBps read speed. Second and much more annoying problem is, that during this copying, CPU on virtual server gets to 100% usage and becomes really laggy. Watching top utility, %wa part of usage (waiting for IO) is the problem. CPU usage on NAS gets somewhere near 60%. It behaves like this on all virtual machines despite of OS (gentoo, centos, winxp) or the fact that virtual hard disk is vmdk file on iscsi mounted volume in ESXi, raw passthrough mounted volume through ESXi or directly connected iscsi volume from NAS to virtual computer.
Another part is copy speed to/from my pc- while copying, i get write speeds about 60-70MBps and cpu usage around 10% (70-80% on NAS). But, while reading, speeds goes just somewhere near to 12MBps.
All virtual computers are configured with vmxnet3 NIC and vmware paravirt SCSI controller.
SMB copy from pc to ssd on server gets somewhere around 90MBps of write speed and low cpu usage on both sides.
Running speedtests with iperf, results were:
- pc as client gives 950mbps
- NAS as client gives 800mbps
- virtual server as client gives 650mbps
NAS is running Nexentastor community edition, I tried openindiana 148 and 151 (results were same). When creating zpools, i used standard settings in nexenta GUI (does compression matter? ).
HW Configuration of machines is this:
NAS:
AMD Athlon x2 250e
8GB DDR3
Asus M5A88-V EVO
Intel X25-V 40GB
1x Intel EXPI9400PTBLK NIC
LSI SAS 9211-8i
6x Samsung 2TB SATA Drives (2x HD203WI, 4x HD204) in RAIDZ2
4x Samsung 1TB SATA Drives in RAIDZ
Server:
Intel Core 2 Quad 9550s
8GB ddr2 ram
Intel DQ45CB
intel x25-m g2 120GB
2x Intel EXPI9400PTBLK NIC
ESXi 5
PC:
Intel Core i7 920
Asus Sabertooth x58
24GB DDR3 RAM
80GB Intel x25-M G2
500GB Samsung SATA Drive
Server with NAS are directly connected via Intel 572 NICs.
I would be really glad if someone could point me to right direction of solving the issue of high cpu load (%wa) while copying from server to NAS and also the issues of low read speeds.
