My resolution is only 1680x1050 and on Team Fortress 2 I often only get 25-30 fps(not even maxed out gfx settings, no AA). CPU is overclocked to 3.2ghz...

Any ideas? driver issues?

Hmmm....Drivers would be my first guess. Is TF the only game youve tried? If not, are you getting poor performance in other games as well?

The only drivers for 6850 come with the cards for now :-( December drivers will be the first public update

There were about 4 10.10 hotfix drivers that were released and all support 68xx cards. The best out of the bunch seems to be the 10.10e.

are you using Cata 10.10e hotfix. I remember reading somewhere that 6850 and 6870 should not use the newest version of cata 10.11

Edit, I have a 6870 and upgrading to 10.10e improved performance somwwhat.

still drops down to 20-25fps often...playing deadwood with 26 players

I have the Gigabyte 6850...

approx what should my video card score in a benchmark? I'll have to run that to see if something is wrong or if that's all this card is capable of.

What are your drive settings? You don't by chance have the AAMode setting all the way to right(Quality)? That forces Super-Sampling which is a performance killer. The best setting for IQ and speed is the middle setting, which is Adaptive MSAA.

CPU limited perhaps?, even at 3.2Ghz it is a much older core duo and with all the TF2 updates, it is a more taxing game then it was when it came out almost... 4 years ago?

AAMode is set at Performance - MSAA

I should try overclocking my CPU further then(never bothered...temps are 21C idle / 34C load with my water cooling even lol). That way if that changes it it would just be CPU.

I know for a fact at 2.6ghz(bootup overclock) FPS is noticeably lower than at 3.2ghz(EasyTune6 settings in windows).

My bet is on your vidcard not going to 3d speed when you play.

A common cause is if you have any kind of video playback or flash acceleraed in the background while you play.

I went back to the stock 10.10 on my 6850, so that starcraft 2 would work right (pylons). My guess is that it is driver issues. I would try the newest hotfix if that doesn't work try just the standard 10.10.

Uh, TF2? Guys, that game uses hella old tech. Your computer can easily handle it....especially if my 8600GT/shitty Pentium D can handle it. I suggest using the ATI driver removal tool, and restarting, then installing the newest drivers from ATI.

ATI cards always gave me problems like this, ever since going nvidia I never have artifact/low FPS/driver problems at all...... this is why ATi is not worth the few bucks saved IMHO. I still think they are great cards, just very touchy and sometimes unused by game designers. This game most definitely was tested with all branded cards though, so I'd check the drivers and/or reformat your drive and test again.

What about the CPU, maybe it's being overclocked / not setup properly..... just a thought? Try running stock everything again just to test your situation.

Is there a monitoring tool you can run to watch the clock speeds as you play?
