Low FPS in WoW

Currently on my rig (the top one in my sig) I'm only getting 16-17 fps no matter level of detail I select in game. I have the 258 drivers (latest but not the 260 beta) for my 9800GTX+. My CPU is at stock.

I think it's time for a new card (waiting at least a week for newer ones to be revealed next week), but could my CPU be the problem being at 2.83Ghz?

For comparison (probably apples to oranges) the second rig gets 60 fps in WoW.
Both rigs CPU cooled by ZALMAN CNPS9700.

Thanks in advance for your help with my nub problems....time for bed...up for 27 hours and don't know if I' making sense. Definitely confusing my self.

I haven't dug into it myself by in my cursory glance it looks like Blizz changed some (a lot?) of the video options in WoW with the latest patch.

Possibly some of the settings defaulted to higher than they were before and it's causing this problem. Referring to shadows, light rays, draw distance/detail, foreground/background FPS, triple buffer, hardware cursor, etc.

a quad core at 2.83ghz should be fast enough to give you more than 16-17 fps... maybe try the 280 in the first system and see what fps u get?

Take it out of full-screen windowed mode. Your card is probably clocking itself down.

The new patch on tuesday really kicked the details up. Drop your settings.

So much for sleeping...over tired now....

I tried this and there were no changes in the fps. Tried fullscreen and windowed mode also. Same result.

Definitely not the computer... at all I'd say.

I used to play WoW when it first came out, and even my crappy no-video card 2004 laptop can still play WoW (playable yes, not nice).

Your computer is far above the needed requirements... I'd say format your drive and play it vanilla to see if its something you did to your PC.

Reinstall and try vanilla! (vanilla= stock game with no add ons or mods)

My room mate was having problems in wow with a 9800 as well. That 280 has way WAY more muscle than that 9800.

I never would have said this 6 weeks ago, but WoW benifits GREATLY from an SSD. It's a huge diff.

Disable/move to another HDD your page file.

You can easily OC that chip to ~3.3 with virtually no increase in thermal to bring it up to par with your E8500 freq(which is a phenominal chip btw)

Assuming the second rig in your signature is running at the same res/iq, there's something not right. Considering my toaster can run WoW at highest settings, something's not right. As suggested, I'd check that your card is not clocking down to 2D speeds for some reason.

You should NOT need a higher card than that 9800 GTX to run WoW.

Turn off all of your mods. You likely have a shitty mod installed that is not 4.x compatible and its killing your performance. Every time one of my friends has a problem like this it is almost always mods..

I assure you WoW is much more visually demanding now on Ultra than you think. A 9800GTX won't do it at max at high resolution anymore.

What resolution are you running at? I was assuming 1920x1200 since thats what most gamers run.

Its probably add ons. My beast rig was getting 12fps. I tried everything. I disabled all my add ons still had an issue. I had to go into the addons folder and delete absolutely everything in it and that fixed it. Wow / interface / add ons. Delete it all. Empty your recycling bin and restart wow. there are some wow related folders that will reinstall when you launch wow.

Tiredness and computers don't mix, lol.

This was it one mod I thought I updated...it wasn't...I didn't.

Thanks to everyone that responded!

Now off to try higher level of detail to make sure.

I was getting just 20-26 FPS until I turned off the one addon I had - Guild2Guild. After I did that it shot up to 40 to 60 FPS. I've never seen a patch have such an adverse effect on many addons as far as FPS goes. Hopefully they'll get updated soon by their authors.

new patch

Well you figured it out , it was mod related. I would suggest for huge patches like this one in the future just run vanilla WoW first then turn on your mods. That way you don't get worried your hardware is failing out right.

People have had problems with the game killing their performance since the game launched. WoW does a horrible job of managing the AddOns and how much CPU time they are allowed. With little effort you could write an AddOn that brings the game to its knees. Even the best intentioned AddOns can ruin performance. A year or so ago I was chilling at a friends house and he wanted me to check something out on his WoW toon. He fired it up and the game was running at maybe 12 to 15FPS, all the time, everywhere he went.

Me: "Holy shit what have you done, this is running horrible"
Friend: "It always runs like this, check out my Paladin"
Me: "No it doesn't always run like this, I don't care about your Paladin, your PC is better than mine, this isn't right"
Friend: "My GF's PC is even slower, this is pretty good"
Me: "It looks like a slide show"
Friend: "I do raids on this, its fine!"
Me: "Let me sit down..."

I checked his AddOns list. He had almost 100 installed, and most of them were old. Apparently he got most of them from downloading large UI replacement packs.. When he was done with an AddOn, he would just minimize it in game, he never actually removed them, so everything was running, all the time. I axed everything, updated the 3 or 4 AddOns he still needed, and launched the game again.

Friend: "Wow its like a new computer! OMG I can't wait to tell my GF, I can't believe this!"

I really wish WoW would have something like an AddOn Store and only allowed updated and approved AddOns to be used with the game. Since the game is incapable of handling AddOns and rejecting bad ones, they need a better system than the "Anything goes" system being used right now.

Agreed. I can imagine half the performance issues in WoW are related to poorly optimized mods that get shoved out and then are required to play in some douche bags guild. I remember how many I had installed during BC just so I could raid with a higher end guild (they made us take screenshots to prove we used them) but the performance cost was huge and even worse when they broke.

When I was still playing I ran only about 2 mods (sometimes 3 if I was leveling) and thats it. I refuse to run a dozen mods and kill my performance for ease of use.
