Low-end GPU recommendations

My bud is looking for a GPU. It will most likely have to be low end and it should stay below $150 and be pci e 16. He thinks his PSU is the stock one that came with his hp dx2300 (~250w).

I was thinking my a 6600GT for him.

He has onboard graphics now so anything will be a big jump. He mainly plays CSS @ 1280 x 1024 with a e2200 @ 2.4ghz.

Suggestions?
 
It Doesn't make sense to be gaming on a nice c2d with a low end graphics card. If he really can't put more into a good card, a 6600 will go him ok, however, maybe futureproofing is the way to go. I would buy a nicer power supply for 60 dollars or so. Corsair PSU for 60 dollars amir, then go with a mid range nvidia 8-series card, that has dx10 support. MSI Card

If at all possible, i would actually tell your friend to invest more money. Now is perhaps the best time ever to pick up a card like an 8800gt, that may cost more, but is the best bang for your buck out there. If he were to get one of those, he should also shoot for a higher wattage psu.

In any event, if you go with the 6600 or 8600, i wouldn't use that POS that is in there now. Low end psus like that can blow, and they can ruin components when they do so.

9600GSO is my vote!
 
at that price range you can get much better than low end
last I checked a 9600gt can go as cheap as $120 AR and thats a very solid card
 
all of you are overlooking one important fact,


He is running a very crappy low end powersupply that came with his HP PC.

He has to have a new PSU in order to get a higher end card. Thus why my recomendation is best so far as it upgrades both.
 
I'd say even with that HP crapola psu it'll do fine with a 7600GT, only uses an extra 50 watts. Plus it is more than doubled the performance of the 6600GT which isn't exactly a power saver.
 
I brought a ati 3650 a few months back (to tie me over untill the new stuff arrives) and it is not a bad graphics card at all. Granted it's only one third of the cores from the 38xx's. I had a go with half life 2 on it and it and it was easily playable. I don't know the power requirements of the top of my head - it seams to run quite cool, and it over clocks heavily.
 
A 6600GT card recently failed in one of our IBM PCs with quite low wattage PSU. We went for a XFX 8600GT. Does need any extra power other than what it gets from the PCIe bus - very light on and quite fast for the money
 
The 8600GT actually uses less power than the 6600GT. I had a 6600GT, and it was a power sucker, at 50w. The 8600GT uses under 40w, blows away the 6600GT in terms of performance, and you should be able to use it without buying a new powersupply.
 
You can find a 8800GT for $150 after rebate. Can't beat it for the price.
