I'm needing some clue as to what to get for my dad's new system. He's put together a e6750 system that he's doing a mild OC on, but while he knows what to get for other stuff, he's not exactly into gaming and doesn't know much about vid cards.

I don't like bugging y'all, but I dunno much about current low-end stuff as I kinda went from a x800 to a 8800GTS and skipped learning about everything inbetween... XD

As to requirements... my dad's wanting something more than integrated video for stuff like google earth. He might get into high def video. He's not going to be doing any gaming. As to resolution... he'll be running at 1920x1200.

Thoughts?

A new ATI 3850 was selling at Best Buy for $143 this week. I don't think you can beat that unless you want a $50 card to just surf and look at photos.

I'm thinking a 3850 is a bit overkill for google earth...

I'm thinking more along the lines of a 8400 GS or a 2400 Pro, but I don't know much about the cards in this range and there may well be something more suitable in the same price range.

Thanks!

I have seen 8400 gs 256mb at zipszoom fly for 20 AR, that being said the ATI hd 2k series will most likely have better color in the low end anyway, but both should work fine for watching HD since both have decoding.

You can find a 7600GT at Newegg for less than $70 after MIR. That's going to be your best option IMHO for simple 3D stuff, or you could grab a 2600XT for HD decoding, but those cost more.
