Hi guys. My mother got me a pair of Klipsch 2.1s for Christmas and I've yet to crack them open. The two factors that attribute to this dilemma are 1) that they seem unchanged from 2001 causing me to believe that there might be better speakers now and 2) that they seem to be the only computer speakers that Klipsch produces anymore, and they're only sold at Best Buy and the Klipsch store to boot. Is there a reason for this decrease in production? Should I look at trading them in for other speakers, such as the M-Audio v40s? Thanks.

Low Down on Klipsch 2.1s?

Thank your Mom but trade those turds in for some M-Audio AV40s! I'm just annoyed that my Klipsch as well as the people I know who owned the Promedias all had issues within a couple years. I found a great deal on the Logitech z2300s so now I'm using that sub with my Klipsch promedia sats. Otherwise, I would definitely be rockin AV40s like the rest of my friends.

Or you can spend $50 more and get the BX5a.
The klipsch pm 2.1's were a very decent system at one time. I never had a problem with mine and they were used very hard for 4 solid years. In Nov the sub went.
Like I said for my pc this system always rocked out very loud, with quality matched up to a x-fi xtreme music card.
Surprised to find them at Best Buy I bought another system. Hooked it up and it was dead. I didn't pay much attention to it as it looked the same. I boxed it up and returned it quickly for another one. This was my mistake. I was in to much of a hurry. It was also a omen that what was decent likely now was big box store junk. Bringing the second 2.1's inside I thought the box felt very light. Soon to discover that the subwoofer which used to weigh 16+ lbs on the old 2.1 now weighs 9 lbs. Also gone is the on/off switch on the Sub, as well as the fuse.
Another quick discovery of the new system was the satellites no longer have jacks on them but are direct wired. Finally the DIN was re-tooled but alas also gone were the specs for the sound.
I pulled the board out of the back of the old sub-woofer and compared it to the new "junk" put in the new sub-woofer and then new when I plugged it in the new system was going be nothing.
I was right. It is pitiful, it has no quality, it clips, distorts and there is no bass, there is nothing to compare it to what the old Klipsch pm2.1's sounded like. You got a Lexus, sold as such but under the hood you have a Toyota Tercel 1.8 Liter engine.
This is not the same speaker system.... in any way!!!
I am not sure how it is legal to market something with such huge changes to the specs on every thing about it and sell it as the same product. This is not the same product as the old model 2.1. There is absolutely no quality to compare it to what was a very decent product sound wise.
Do yourself a favor and go to the Klipsch website where there are photos and plenty of whining about the new klipsch pm 2.1's in their own forums. Better yet do yourself a favor and don't even open what you have but return it.
There are still some older produced systems in the stores I hear and open box but the new pm 2.1's in way offer a value for the price, they are about $70.00 to high for what you get a similar sounding system for.
If you read the reviews on best buy notice the dates. You start to see some real stinker reviews on a previously very highly rated system as of late. Because some are now getting the totally new revamped 2.1's and can't understand how others rated them so high all this time.
Had this been the same sounding system as the older ones you mention I would recommend them for what they are based on the very decent sound quality and subwoofer , but they are not!!!

Both my roommates have M-Audio monitors (BX5a, and AV-40s).
They sound good but dont have even close to the amount of "bass" that my Promedias do. Mine have been working perfectly for around 3 years i wanna say.
Got em for $100 from buy.com, couldnt really ask for anything more out of em. Also takes up so much less desk space, which is important for my soon to be eyefinity setup (whenever AMD comes out with the 6990...)
Best gaming/movie speakers ever. For only music (probably 30% of my listening), id probably go with a monitor setup instead but for Dubstep, DNB, and Rap I love my klipsch's
