My current home server workhorse is a 10 year old HP 542x PC and am thinking it's time for an upgrade. It's an old 1.8ghz celeron, 2 gb DDR, a couple of IDE and eSATA drives, 400mhz FSB. I love the old girl but she's getting slow and have been maxing it out with upgrades and add-on cards.

I want at

1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc

This will be a web server hosting several web .NET apps, SQL server, central media/music storage, backups, email, dns, and dhcp. No need for a fancy video card. I'd like to also run 1 or more VM sessions using hyper-v as well, so some power will be welcome.

2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?

No more than $400. $300 or less is preferred. Though I think $400-$500 may be actual :-D

3) Where do you live?

Maryland

4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. Please be very specific.

I'm looking for a board, PSU (or PSU/case combo), at least 4 gb ram (8 would be preferred and ideal), CPU, and 1 SATA drive (500 gb or more). No fancy case needed! This will be a closet server. CPU should be at least dual core, quad is preferred. I'm not sure about a preference to AMD or Intel, though suggestions are welcome. It's for development work as well as media sharing with other PCs in the house.

5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.

I can reuse the mini-ATX (??) case from my current server as well as a CD drive from another PC. However, if a good psu/case combo can be found, the better. Can always reuse the PC elsewhere.

6) Will you be overclocking?

NO

7) What size monitor do you have and/or plan to have?

None.

8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?

Within the next month or so.

9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? etc.

Board must support a minimum of 8gb ram (4 slots). No raid. No firewire. No SLI/crossfire. 3gb/s eSATA is preferred. I currently use a PCI-esata card which is only 1.5gb/s.

10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If yes, what OS? 32bit or 64bit?

Yes, I have a legit copy of Win 2k8 R2 server from dreamspark.

MANY THANKS to anyone who can provide some suggestions. I'm happy with shopping anywhere. Newegg and Tigerdirect preferred. Thanks!

Ryan

How many drives are you planning to add to this server? Or better yet: how many drives can you add to that mATX case?

If you're near the Microcenter in MD, they've got bundle deals for CPU/Mobos right now. $50 off any mobo w/ purchase of an AMD CPU costing $70 or more. That discount is reduced to $30 if the CPU costs less than $70. They've also got some Intel deals, but the discount is less than that AMD $50 off bundle.
