Low buck PPD?

So a friend and I have been thinking of building a small farm in the basement. Thinking about that, and the fact that I don't have money to play with g34 gear, what are good cpus to get some decent ppd?

What I am thinking:
OS side is perhaps a linux install onto USB setup as persistent
Power supply-split 1 between to mobo/cpu
Mobo, on board video, more than likely matx boards(cheap)
Ram 2gb per
CPU, thinking quads at least, which one is better performance? AMD or intel?

The other cost is power consumption, hence no GPU folding.

Thoughts? Am I on the right track? I spent some time over the weekend cursing Google, it seems that there are 2 camps, 1 to use an existing machine when idle, the other to go balls-out and play with the big toys.

How much cash do you have to throw at it? If you find the right deal, you can get some G34 hardware rather cost effectively.

<foreshadows DC FS/FT thread>

if you are going to just quads, Intel, better clock/clock performance hands down.

I am not going to have the cash to toss at it all in 1 shot, hence the looking at the low buck ppd. Looking at the g34 stuff, yeah I'd like to have me some of that, however I don't have that kind of cash to toss at it.

Thinking FS/T, CL, ebay for the components and perhaps even a MC deal here or there.

On the intel quads, is there a certain model to watch for?

I did score up that box from R-Type that is crunching away and have about 4 servers and 4 desktops going at it. I know some of the desktops I have are prob not worth it, so would like to consolidate them.

Again, what is your initial budget? What is your total budget? A 2p or 4p G34 rig can be built in chunks - it just depends on how big your chucks can be.

If you have a mircrocenter nearby you can take advantage of the 2500K specials and get a motherboard for $50 off. Throw in 4gb of ram, a cheap CX430 from newegg, cheapy recert hard drive, 212+ HSF and you might make $300-350 for each rig. Of course this means you fold nekkid.

you thinking older hardware? like socket 775 and am2+? In my experience (have both folding right now) these are almost on par clock for clock. I have a Phenom II X4 940 and Xeon X3330, both around 3.5GHz. frame times on the two are almost the same. both are currently producing around 12000 ppd. any quad should be ok, just keep in mind that you will want to overclock it at least a little to take better advantage of the quick return bonus.

There is an MC about an hr away, I think my friend si going to get one fo those 8 core FX chips.

I got a Phenom 960T that is coming, crossing my fingers for 4ghz on air, and will be tickled pink if the extra 1 or 2 cores unlock and come for the ride.

I just sold off my desktop so using a dell server as a desktop that does not let me oc the cpu, it is a q9550 which I know is good for some OC action. The 9800gt in there is going though, the screen is starting to artifact which I am going to blame on folding as that card got hot for extended amounts of time.
