Hey all, I just built a new system for a buddy of mine with the following setup:

AMD Barton 2500+ @ 205x11 (2.26ghz)
Epox 8rda3+ revision 2.1
Corsair XMS heat spreader 1024mb 2-3-3-6 in dual channel
SP97 heat pipe with 92 MM Tornado
Windows XP Professional
POWERCOLOR ATI 9600 PRO

The videocard is running catalyst 3.10's, and the CPU Temps are 28 degrees.

When I ran 3dmark2001 at 1024x768 with no AA/AF etc. I obtained a score of ~9630.

When I ran 3dmark2003 at 1024x768 with no AA/AF etc. I obtained a score of ~2650.

These scores seem very low for this card, i'm lost as to what to try next. It's running at 8x AGP.

Any ideas guys? I really appreciate it.

did you go to start, run and type in dxdiag then check the display tab to make sure agp acceleration is enabled?

Is it a 256mb card? My friend has one that's only 400/400 and performs similar to that.

those scores really resemble the scores of a 9600np. even a pro on a crappier system than that would score at least 3300+ in 2k3

It's a 128 mb card. I havent tried the DX thing yet, but I will try it. Thanks

proper chipset drivers?

correct settings in the ati tab?

For a 9600pro i think those scores are low something is wrong either agp acceleration is not ON. Or you have aa/af ON. Or you have the settings to quality instead of performance. Because i use to get 14k on 2001se and 4k on 2003 with my old fx5600nu. Check your settings before you benchmark.

I'll turn accel on when I get over to my buddies house. Are there any other settings that I can tweak while i'm at it?

Yes, set the direct 3d and open gl setting to performance and not quality. Make sure for both d3d and ogl you have aa/af turned OFF. If you CAN"T set agp acceleration to ON then you need to install your motherboard drivers.

I'm sorry to say this, but your 3DMark scores (~9630 3DMark2001SE points, ~2650 3DMark2003 points) are in line with other scores from R9600 Pros, for your overclocked CPU speed class - unless you overclock both your GPU and your GFX memory. (Your CPU and your system RAM may be overclocked, but such overclocking delivers minimal if any impact on 3DMark scores.)

And that low 3DMark2003 score of ~2650 (less than half the score of the R9800 Pro on the same system) is due to the fact that the entire R9600 series have only 4 pipelines and one single texturing unit per pipeline. (The R9800 Pro, of course, has 8 pipelines and maybe 2 texturing units per pipeline.)

Uhh, not exactly.
3dmk2k3
9600pro @ 500/300 ~ 3780
9600pro @ 400/300 ~ 3382

SO i think something is wrong with his setup.

Maybe so. Some motherboards will actually perform slower when the CPU FSB is overclocked than they do at stock clock-speed settings, in order to gain stability at overclocked settings. Apparently, his particular motherboard is one of those boards. That particular Epox motherboard is made for overclocked stability first, overclocked performance second.

Other than what I had mentioned, perhaps he had other programs running in the background when he ran those 3DMark tests. For the best scores, there should be practically nothing at all whatsoever running in that Windows taskbar (the volume control and the graphics card control panel applets are okay there - but there should be no anti-virus or similar progs, music player applets or media managers running in that taskbar), and nothing whatsoever in the Startup folder.

E4g1e, you're so right. I was getting low scores with my 9800 and when I turned off everything my scores skyrocketed.
