I have recently bought a bfg 6800gt and a antec 430 truepower. Before upgrading,my comp ran with no noise. Now theres like a low yet annoying amount of noise coming out of my pc. Is this normal?

Well it could be either the fan on the GT or the fan on the Antec...why is it hard to understand?

On you're video card...there is this big fan thing...just take it right off.
Get's rid of the noise :)

yea that low noise is most likely normal. Don't know what video card you had before, but I'm only assuming you had something slower than the GT. Now with fast speed video card, it needs a faster fan (although no where near as bad as the 5700 series)

you'll eventually go deaf enough where you can't hear your video card any more ;)

(you just get used to it with faster speeds)

I'm kinda getting a hinch that its the graphic card's fans. But won't the graphic card melt or something if you take the fan off?

Not exactly melt but you'll ruin it if you don't have properly cooling on the card.

It could be the power supply humming from the extra draw. Especially if the power supply is hot inside (power output drops when they heat up, and thus the components may emit a hum when under heavy load).

*laughing* Oh my god I hope you're joking about removing the fan because I was!

don't remove the fan unless you know what you're doing and you're going to put on another type of RECOMMENDED fan

When it comes to high-end and/or aftermarket add-on components, there should be no expectation of low noise.

Ok, my original post looks a little smartass but....you are going to have to tell us what you had in there previously because "quiet" is not much of a description. The sound and pitch of noise is always going to change when you add or change components that have cooling fans.

Before installing my new antec true 430 and bfg 6800gt, I had a fx5200 and a 250 watt power supply from a company that I don't think even exists anymore. Before I upgraded, there was absolutly no noise whatsoever.

Heres my PC after upgrading: Hp pavilion a530n
Amd 64 3200
1024 mb ram
250 watt bestec power supply
nforce3 150
asus k8n8x-la motherboard

O by the way, my new 6800gt is also getting a bit hot, running at around 86 celcius while playing halo and farcry. Any way to maybe cool it down?

That card is pulling 55+ watts from your power supply when your playing Farcry, that generates a lot of heat. 86 celcius is probably about the norm.

Ok, first of all your 250w power supply probably had only one low speed fan if any at all.....and the heatsink fan on the GT is going to spin faster and louder than what you had on the 5200. Nothing to worry about unless it bothers you in which case I suggest lining your case with noise suppression mats that you can find from most online computer parts vendors..

edit- as far as cooling your GT..do you have any other case fans? If you live in a warm climate you need as many case fans as your case has holders for... you might even consider a slot fan to go in a pci slot.

The new noise is your GT for sure. I upgraded from the 9700Pro to the GT and my PC got much louder. Now I'm watercooling the GT things are back to being quiet again. The GT stock cooler isn't super-loud or anything but it's certainly noticeable!

The GT does run very hot but it's hardly surprising. The NV40 GPU has about 222 million transistors - that's about 4x the number found in a P4 Northwood core. Now compare the size of the GT's heatsink and a stock Intel P4 cooler. The GT's cooler is a very small aluminium heatsink with a volume of about 33cm³, my stock Intel P4 cooler is a very large aluminium heatsink with a copper base and a volume of around 266cm³. BTW, I know this is a gross simplification and there are good reasons why we can't have huge heatsinks on video cards!! But it's easy to see why the 6800GT runs so hot - bazillions of transistors plus a high power consumption/dissipation and a heatsink the size of a weasel's wedding tackle. :(
