So I'm selling my old computer to a friend of mine, and as such don't want to spend a whole lot more on it, but the NB fan is incredibly loud. I have an Abit IS-7 which has kind of a mini zalman on it. The heatsink is round with a fan sunk in the middle of it. Any ideas to replace/fix without spending a whole lot?

I had an Abit IC-7G Raid Max II with a smallish round heatsink and fan mounted in the middle on the chipset IC. It had two wire arms that extended out and hooked under wire loops on the motherboard. Work the wire arm out of the loop and the unit came off the board and disconnect the power lead. Under the fan blades were three small screws holding the fan to the heatsink. Take them out and be careful not to lose them. This removes the fan, where you will find a sticker on the back of the body of the fan, opposite the side with the fan blades. Carefully work the sticker off, until the middle part is exposed with the fan shaft and the bearing showing. Put some lubricant in the opening with the shaft and bearing and replace the sticker, remount the fan in the heatsink with the screws and remount it back on the motherboard. If you want to be nice clean off the old thermal grease and apply new grease on the heatsink to IC surface. I had to do this every six to ten months when the fan became very noisy.
