The new Lost Planet demo, in both DX9 and DX10 flavors is out today. The game has a built in benchmark feature and is being used around the web to showcase the power of NVIDIA’s GeForce 8-series GPUs.

Lost Planet: Extreme Condition is the first game demo that takes advantage of NVIDIA GeForce 8 Series DirectX 10-compatible graphics processors. NVIDIA has worked closely with Capcom to bring the hit Xbox 360 action shooter to the PC, providing technical expertise and GeForce® 8 Series graphics processing units (GPUs) for development and testing. Lost Planet is in NVIDIA’s The Way Its Meant To Be Played® program.

As you can imagine, AMD had something to say about the DX10 demo because it was co-developed by NVIDA under its The Way Its Meant To Be Played program. This is what AMD had to say:

Before you begin testing, there are a few points I want to convey about “Lost Planet”. “Lost Planet” is an Nvidia-sponsored title, and one that Nvidia has had a chance to look at and optimize their drivers for. The developer has not made us aware of this new benchmark, and as such the ATI Radeon driver team has not had the opportunity explore how the benchmark uses our hardware and optimize in a similar fashion. Over the next little while AMD will be looking at this, but in the meantime, please note that whatever performance you see will not be reflective of what gamers will experience in the final build of the game.

Wow, great server for a demo download!

Pulling down at ~1.5MB/Sec showing 4 min to complete :)

Translation - not only does our DX10 part suck, but our drivers also suck. Please don't bash us too hard, any more bad PR and we will go out of business.

Will have to try it out when I get home. Hopefully its stable. Games are hit and miss in Vista.

I think that ATi is right on this one, but at the same time it DOES show what the 8800 can do in regards to performance, and it is VERY nice. I had my 8800gts 320meg cranked up to the max on all the settings and the game was VERY playable.

I'm very impressed with my 8800 and DirectX 10 so far.

And Inorganic, I hate to burst your bubble, but take a look at the Call of Juarez DX10 benchmarks which show how the new ATi performs, it's a solid performer.

ATi didn't say that their DX10 part sucks, they just want people to know that the demo has been worked on with NVidia in mind, not ATi, so optimal performance might not be seen with their DX10 cards. It happens with alot of games...NVidia or ATi gives them the hardware to develope on so X game is better performing with Y hardware because there has been optimizations done with it.

Don't be sour over what they said, I happen to agree with their statement 100%, and it remains to be seen on the end user side just how the 2900 is going to perform. I'm not a ATi fanboy in the least, but don't shit all over them with a 7 year old sour-grapes response.

All tests I've seen on other sites show the 2900 in between the 8800gts and gtx in dx10. This is a viable claim.

Oh enough about the 2900XT being a flop etc. How does this DX10 demo look and play? The post from fella getting decent perfomance with max settings on a 8800 320MB GTS made my day. After seeing the poor numbers from Call of Juarez in DX10 I was starting to be afraid that DX10 gaming wasn't going to be all that (<40fps @1024x768 is shitty).

Those numbers do look good, but the resolutions they are testing at are kinda low. I'd like to see numbers at 1600x1200 and up.

I did mine at hte max available, 13something by something lol...not to specific but I had most of hte settings cranked up to the max and was getting no stutter, lag, etc at all.

As a side note, I think they've added 64 bit extensions into the game...when I start it up it detects it on the performance evaluation ( x64). If that's teh case then there might be more games a comin that takes advantage of 64bit CPUs for that extra edge.

What are the specs for your rig? I'm wondering if we will be limited by the video cards or if the CPU will come into play here. I saw some benchmarks on HotHardware that were run at 1280x1024 on a AMD 4200+ X2 machine. They were above 40fps on the 8800GTS and GTX.

I'm also happy to report that the DX10 version of the demo runs silky smooth on my rig:

Xeon 3060 running @ 3Ghz, 2gb of ram, and a 8800GTS 640mb with the 158.42 drivers

I had everything cranked up as high as it would go, and it looked absolutely amazing. No lag whatsoever.

The only downside was that I couldn't run it in the native res of my widescreen, but it still looked great. Like someone mentioned earlier, the highest supported res appears to be "13 something by something" lol

I wish I had a chance to try it... but I don't have a DX10 card.

I ran it in 1920x1080. It ran well with whatever settings it defaulted to (I have an 8800gtx). It looked pretty good, too. I had to unplug my joystick because it was somehow set as the only controller. I had to unplug it because I couldnt find a place to disable it in-game... That game needs a lot of work and I don't think I'll play it, but it was cool to actually use DX10 in a game.

I think I fully understand why ATI is doing damage control over this: Legit Reviews has a article up on this. Link Doesn't paint a pretty picture for ATI, only from what the results show. (I'm NOT pro or con ATI!)

A co-worker mentioned that you really play it for the boss battles and nothing else. It looks pretty but the overall gameplay leaves much to be desired. I'll give it a shot anyway. It's DX10 based and it's a demo (free) so I almost feel obligated to try it. I also happen to like third person action titles.

doesn't work under Vista Ultimate 64x

You need to go to Microsoft's website and install the latest Direct X update for DX9 (yes, even though you have Vista with DX10). That worked for me. I have to say that I'm a little underwhelmed with the performance in the game. At 1280x720 with everything maxed out, the frames per second never break 20. Using a C2Q 6600, 2GB RAM, 8800GTS 320MB, Vista 32 bit. I'm pretty sure the video card is a bottle neck.

... not a small bit odd. I'll give it a shot...

Doesn't work for me either under Vista x32. I have DX10 installed, the newest nvidia drivers, and it says xcontrol3_1.dll is missing, re-installing may fix this problem. (or some DLL file with close to that name) Re-installed, same thing. Oh well. Fail.

I can't edit for some reason, but I tried the DX9 fix, but no dice.

I'm not impressed at all. I uninstalled it.. lol.

1920x1080
DirectX 10 native
4xaa
16xaf
high settings on everything else

Never got over 22fps.. average was 15fps or so. On top of that, HL2 has better graphics. The snow looked like cheap shit someone drew in mspaint, the fire looks HORRIBLE like something from Duke Nukem, some textures were mildly 'decent', the cars stuck in the snow looked like polygonal HL1 vehicles, the one monster's butt looked like a octagon, and lastly gameplay sucked. Nvidia should be embarrassed of this demo.. seriously.

Oh.. the only good thing in this was the sound quality. I'll give it that. (couldn't edit my post)

phew, hopefully its bad coding because I didn't get great results...I started looking at going with an 8800GTS until I saw this thread...maybe better luck with the final product.

The game ran great at 1920x1200 for me. I used max settings except for no AA, low HDR, medium shadows and default shadow resolution. I was above 30fps %99 of the time. Simple gameplay but really fun. I like the occasional run around and mindlessly kill shit action game. It looks really good. I'm impressed by the effects.
