Hello,
I've been having all sorts of weird computer issues lately. I think I've finally decided it must be a PSU issue (system freezes but mostly random restarts...RAM checks okay). I have had problems before with harddrives "losing" formatting (XP sees it as RAW then). I've always managed to get the data back just fine and recently discovered TestDisk which worked perfectly for that issue.
Well, tonight I was watching a movie in the other room through my tv card and when I came back to my computer I noticed it was kinda frozen even though the movie had continued to play. So, I had to reboot and when I came back I realized it looks like something got messed up with my H: partition and it caused the system to flake out as it had disappeared.
The basic issue is this...I had a 250 GB drive on my primary slave. It is almost evenly split and formatted to a 125 GB NTFS G: partition named "250gigA" and a 125 GB NTFS H: partition named "250gigB" In WinXP, with Explorer the H: partition shows up just as local disk...in Disk Management it just says "Healthy"...but not RAW or unallocated space.
The process I tried for fixing this didn't work like it did all of the other times. TestDisk seems to see both partitions just fine from the outset though. Also, if I tell it to list files on the partition in question it finds them all just fine. This drive was from when I built
this computer three years ago and I was unsure about some things...so, while this drive is strictly for data and not running an o/s off of...I had mistakingly made that first G: partition primary bootable (so like in WinXP Disk Management it reads "Active" while my C: partition reads "System") so perhaps that is an issue??? I mean, I guess everything is
intact I just can't get it to show up. I tried accessing the drive through an external enclosure but then it won't show anything.
The creator of TestDisk puts on his site to just ask him for help and he responded very quickly which was nice, but I'm not sure about what he said. He says the drive has many bad sectors and pointed me to how to duplicate the drive and then to run checkdisk on the new one to repair the filesystem. But the directions are for Linux so I have no idea about any of that. I assume he means to basically "clone" the bad drive to a new drive and then try to fix the errors on the new copy just so in case something goes wrong I'm not further hosing the data on the bad drive, right?
As I said...the first partition on the drive is fine...I can see it in XP and all of the data is good...and TestDisk does in fact see the partition and all of the files on the missing partition. Any ideas? Any recovery software I might have luck with? Thanks for reading and for any help!
