I just purchased a LG 42" TV (42LK450) and would like to be able to watch some movies I have on my hard-drive. I also have someone else living with me, and she would like to be able to do the same. There are times where we don't want to watch things at the same time.

What is the most straightforward way to stream movies from any computer over the network to the TV? The TV has VGA, component, HDMI, and optical inputs. There's also a USB port on the side.

Don't let this influence anyone's opinion, but I have some spare PC parts that are not in use (Intel mobo and Q8400, 4GB DDR2). I have ideas as to putting those to use, but they seem like overkill and I'd be spending some money to fill in the gaps. I would prefer to sell them if I could.

I'd like to spend the least amount of money to achieve only streaming (over the network). Anyone?
 
No consoles. I was looking at a Boxee Box. Can anyone answer me this, since I have no experience with HDMI + network streaming: say I am able to stream a video from a Boxee Box to the TV. I have an ethernet cable plugged into the Box, and an HDMI cable running inbetween the Box and TV. Will I have sound through the TV's speakers on whatever I'm streaming?
 
wdlive with b-rad firmware, roku box i dont like because you cant manually set your IP / DNS incase your not in the U.S and want access to U.S content.

Yes, sound will go over HDMI.
 
I know this is quite a bit more expensive than a Boxee box or WD Live, but would a PS3 suit my needs as well? I'd be streaming *.mkv files over the network and onto the TV.

It seems like people jump for the b-rad firmware for the improved functionality and erm... the movie sheets. I wonder how the WD TV Live's firmware is now. I was reading stuff from 2010 in some places, and don't want to lose access to services that WD licenses (Netflix, etc.).

Might you be able to convince me why I'd be better off with the b-rad firmware rather than the stock?
 
it has better options and you wont loose netflix access, ore shouldn't, the movie sheets is what does it for me, i have a massive collection and with out seeing the covers, and such i then have to go on the internet to see what new movies may be about cause i cant remember them :)

If you dont want movie sheets and the other options it has, which i know most people dont use, then you may be better on stock firmware.

Worse case try it out and if you dont like it go back to stock.

Do you happen to know if you can literally roll back to the 100% original firmware once b-rad is installed?

Also, you can modify the WD Live's theme "legally" to make it appear like this:

But you are interested in the additional information that is pulled from IMDB or wherever as well, so that above theme probably wouldn't satisfy you. AT LEAST it'd be under warranty if it bricks/breaks.
