Lost data durring XP Pro install?

I'm trying to install XP Pro back onto my system after a format of my 40gb master. it gets stuck at p3.sys. The disc is kinda scratchy so i am buying a new one (My dad gets academic prices). In the boot / formatting screen of XP Pro, it says my 80gb slave is empty...... I have evertyhing backuped there and never touched it with anything...... Faulty read? There is nothing to my knowledge that would have formated it. I have over 50gb of music and all my important backups there..... i sure as hell hope i didnt loose it.
 
That's exactly what will happen when you try to install Windows XP with your backup/data drive still connected. Why? Because Windows XP setup will automatically blank out your data drive and copy system files to that drive. The only way to avoid that problem is to disconnect your data/backup hard drive, and install Windows XP with only your main boot/system drive connected. (Any CD or DVD drives must remain connected in order to install Windows, however.) And only after Windows XP is up and running (and not just in the process of being installed) may you reconnect your data drive (with your system shut down and unplugged). Hope this helps.
 
anything in my documents or another folder xp uses for install will be gone after upgrade, and yea your screwed unless u can find a recover program i've seen one the screen savers. nothing on the slave drive will get erased, the stuff i said before on the master will. don't worry about it and unplug the slave. by the way reo speedwagon sucks

Don't feel like you are alone Win 98 did that to me a long time ago. It really sucked too cause at the time I was on dial up.
