Lost Coast is out

NV doesnt do 6x AA, so youre doing no AA with that setting. they do 2, 4, another quality 4, and 8x super sampling

that 16x af is unneeded and killing your frames. HDR itself isnt exactly the easiest thing to render either.

I had that purple glitch too, and I dip in to the mid twenties with 4xssaa 8xaf 1680x1050, but still very playable.

it would play it, it just felt pretty damn laggy. FRAPS confirmed this, it was dipping to the low 20's

the card is on its way out (its dying) so maybe that has something to do with it. the new card should be here tomarrow (advanced RMA)

edit: it seems the only part it does that in is the very begenning, the rest of the game is fine with 2x4x
The beginning is defintely the most demanding. Makes you think twice about your settings. I set it to 1024x768 after the start, but quickly changed back to 1280x1024 2xAA/4xAF. I figure I'll handle 30 avg. fps. The level wasn't hard at all and I just wanted to check out the scenery. Oh... and I'm only running 1 GT, not two... as my sig says.

That was Short n' Sweet, I ran it 1600x1024 w/ 4X FSAA and it ran pretty nice.

d2_lostcoast_rs.jpg

full res shot.

mathesar.... one word:

DAMN!

I just played it before... Ran pretty well at 1024x768... 2xAA High settings. Frames were not always stable though...

[joke]And I didn't notice any differents from normal HL2.

I wonder why :p [/joke]

Found a bug. If you do a "timerefresh" in the console everything turns black with just a few strands of color. You must restart the game to get it back to normal.

Did you consider maybe not doing this and just playing?

"Where did you hear that?"

Here.

"Interestingly, SLI does appear to function with HDR rendering enabled (we loaded up the SLI real-time graphs to check) but it does not seem to show any meaningful performance increases – at most 5-6% difference. Our Pentium 4 SLI testbed managed to squeeze out a slight performance lead here, but there certainly was no noticeable difference between the speeds of our various platforms."

I can confirm this, yes SLI with HDR really doesn't do much in terms of FPS boosts.

thase comments and testing were for FarCry, that doesn't mean it applies to every game

Did you know that pink algae appears when you set the res to 1280 x 1024? At least it did for me.
It also made one of the combine a bit religious. This only happened one time and was gone after a restart. Thought you guys/gals might be [/IMG]

after you change resolution, AA or AF you need to restart the game

No, it's the full throttle for noob. :D

But yeah, demo ran ok. x800xl, Socket A system. Played it in 1024, 4xAA, 4xAF and it was easily playable. Some areas slowed into what I'd guess to be around 15~20fps, but generally, it was playable.

The fisherman was crap though. Sorry, but after all the fuss, the model just didn't seem to be anything special. The problem is that we, as humans, see people's faces everyday and can distinguish literally hundreds or facial expressions by perceiving the oh so subtle movement of hundreds of facial muscles. A human face in a game needs to be perfect in order for it to look right. Infact, I'd argue it'd need to be beyond perfect to make it look real since you have to first defeat the context of the 'it's a video game' environment as well.

I thought the Fisherman looked great.

Yeah so I downloaded lost coast, played it for about 5 minutes and got insanely bored and stopped.

That's fine. Timerefresh has never had much use :p

You mean you didn't finish the level? You're one of those people that get up and leave a theater right before the end of a movie, aren't you?

No, I've never left the theater while seeing a movie and I especially wouldn't do that these days. Gotta get your $14 worth.

Maybe I missed something, but is there any way to go and explore the town and factory after or before you complete this level? I rode that basket back down to the beginning after downing the helicopter and the level ended automatically. Also, there are the leaches in the water....

start a new game, open the console

type noclip and hit enter, you can then fly around the entire map

I also noticed those damn leeches.. It took me a good three trys to get across without getting killed (btw, if you walk along the rocks for as long as you can then jump in, the leeches wont bite if you haul some ass in the water)...

Screw noclip, I'm a true gamer :D (with lots of time)

lets just say that the town is better viewed from a distance

wow, it is barely playable at 1280x1024 2xaa/16xaf with full HDR on an X850 XT-PE, and i mean barely playable, i'd really want to go to 1280x1024 noaa/16xaf or drop to 1024x768 if i wanted aa

wow

tough cookie

you know whats even a toughier cookie!? I just spend a shitload of money on a new video card, and it can play valve's next gen games at a subpar framerate.. man, please donkey punch me now

Im downloading it now, probably going to kill my card but will be an interesting picture show. As for purple stuff, that always happens to me when my video card is a little past stable overclocking wise.

can you actually SEE 16X AF? Seriously, stop obsessing, I can't even tell the difference beyond 4xAF and anything above. You have to have a magnifying glass to tell.

Is it just me or does starting up any source game directly result in a memory error now?

Edit: I also noticed that steam sucks up 100% cpu when the systemtray popup menu is open. Guess I'll have to wait till steam fixes the mem problem to see lost coast.

yes, i can tell the difference

Well I was able to play it at 1024x768 with everything set to high and HDR. 4XAA I think.

6800 (unlocked & overclocked) & 2800+

There were a few spots where it lagged but otherwise I was getting around 30fps.

Well, we've got confirmation from BBRickJames that SLI isn't helping his performance with this game's HDR, either. So given that every new game will use HDR this is a serious knock against two video card solutions, more so than the already serious "256+2 doesn't equal 512" problem. I don't think Kyle took a serious enough look at these SLI drawbacks in his recent editorial, it was too anecdotal. We need to take these things into consideration and hold the graphics industry's feet to the fire on this..

I dont understand. Plays fine for me at that res with 2xaa/8xaf. Maybe asking too much with 16xaf

Can anyone mention how to force the fx5900 to run dx9... I want see if the fx really does support dx9 with HDR (2 or 3 FPS @ 800x600 is fine :p). PS Runs great on my x800xt AIW.

i'm running a P4 3.0 in my primary computer though, it is barely playable at that setting, i'm sure with your faster CPU it would be playable at that setting

That doesn't mean it won't work in future products. This is just a tech demo meant to push the bounds of performance after all.

I set everything to max, except the res which is limited by my monitor..1280x1024. FSAA to 6x and AF to 16x and I got 30 avg FPS. I think that sucks. I mean what is holding me back? Is it my RAM? Or is the game just that demanding that even a GTX cant handle it?

I know I just quoted myself but does anyone know why this happens?

dude, just for hah ha's , lower your oc and tighten the ram timings. I am curious if you get an improvement

Anybody know what the deal is with the wierd texture on the rocks? I didn't go beyond this as I had to go to lunch, but it definitely doesn't look normal to me. I've yet to encounter anything like this in another game (FEAR, Q4, BF2), but this is the first time I've run HDR. I had all settings maxed at 1280x1024 and 2xAA, 4xAF in those shots.

that's how it is suppose to look, the idea is to reflect a wet rock surface, it's a shader
