Ok the relevance to this in the video card forum is that it's the new stress tester for the Source engine, and I'd be interested to see some benchmarks to see hwo the X1800's fair against the 7800's. Just a heads up...

May we see a small write up on this in the near future?

it will be used in an upcoming review, and from here on out until Aftermath is released

Is aftermath going to bring anything knew graphically? I thought it would just be adding a new episode to the storyline

Please stress to your readers, Brent, that Valve's HDR implementation isn't the same as what's found in, say, Far Cry and Chaos Theory.

In fact, it would be kind of interesting to read an analysis of the pros and cons of these different HDR implementations. You guys should ping Valve and see if you could get some Q&A going with one of the programmers. Just a suggestion.

Has anyone tried it yet? I already finished the game 3x and can reinstall via steam. Is it worth the time of doing this. Is there anything integral to the actual storyline found in this level or do you merely go around killing bugs and combine with a new hdr effect to admire? Also last question I've had for a while is, does the lost coast map enable hdr in the entire game or just for that level? Thx in advance. ;)

It's basically to show off the source engine but it does tie-in with highway 17 part of half life 2...

I havent opened steam yet but all I can say is 'ABOUT FREAKING TIME!'

BTW: CAPS LOCK: ITS LIKE THE CRUISE CONTROL FOR AWESOME!

OK just played it. Graphically awesome but don't expect any challenges in terms of gameplay. Will take you 20 minutes maximum to complete. Again, graphically it is stunning

Commentary was relatively pointless but had some cool visual aids on some of them.

Looks great although the visual effects still need to be tweaked to make everything less shiny. Human skin was almost perfect but the wet rocks were rediculous.

According Driverheaven's article, there is (was) a FP16 blending HDR path in TLC (it was showed at E3 with 6800U Sli), but it was dropped because of the lack of FSAA.
I wonder if we'll see it back? (because R520 can do both and Valve stated FPbl HDR is the future)

Found a bug. If you do a "timerefresh" in the console everything turns black with just a few strands of color. You must restart the game to get it back to normal.

I've gone through it already, and it's basically a tech demo. You go around with the little chat bubbles, hit use, and one of the devs starts talking about the development process for each effect they put in the tech demo, which includes HDR, new character modeling, detailed descriptions of how they render things like water reflections and glass refractions. The "story" of it is that there's one of those headcrab pod launchers on top of a church and you have to take it out. Not hard, but it's interesting nonetheless.

On a side note, with an X850XT @550/590 3700+ at 10x250 running 1680x1050 4xAA 8xAF with full HDR enabled i averaged around 15-25 FPS

and so you will...
Are you guys finally going to review the X1800XT? Any news on CrossFire edition? I'm a little eager for X1800 crossfire results :D

neato, ill have to give a spin when i get back to my desktop :)

I have somewhat of the same issue, except when I timerefresh, all the lighting goes out and im left with a VERY dark level in all black/gray shades. The only true light comes up from the 3 smoke stacks across the map.. otherwise, the map looks gorgeous.

It would have teken my 5 min, if my fps had gotten higher than 5. Poor, poor 9800 pro.

I'd rather they work on a sequel than a worthless tech demo, but it was an enjoyable 20 minutes nonetheless.

wow I was getting like 4-5 fps in my 9600pro @ 500/320 on a 2.5ghz barton.
1024x
No FSAA
AF x4

HAHA sucks for you!!! J/K, what do u get on normal hl?

30 fps in large areas to 100 fps in urban.

1280x1024 All High, 4x TSAA, 16xAF, Full HDR

game is so beautiful but it like beat it in 10 minutes on Hard...

...why does it still say not released on my steam...?

edit: restarted steam and it updated itself.. nevermind

All I can say is WOW! Great Tech demo! Was playing at 1152x864RES and Everything all in game graphical options at max with 8xTransparency AA and 16xAF. Looked beautiful! I had a couple bug issues with the game. Like when I died and the demo restarted there were a bunch of enemy soldiers floating about 2 feet in the air not moving. I restarted the game and it was fixed. Can't wait for Aftermath!

I was running it at 1280 X 1024, 6X AA and 16X AF, Full HDR and Iwas getting about 46FPS in large areas all the way up to 175FPS in the city and etc...

So now that this has come out, what do you guys think about what's to come with Vavle and STEAM? Also, how would you compare this (even though it's a tech demo) to a current game on the market, lets say F.E.A.R. or Quake 4 in terms of graphics and general performance? This tech demo didn't seem to utilize SLI....

Thoughts?

Valve is definately one up on those other guys, visually wise.

edit: IMO

Isn't it true you get no performance increase with HDR in SLI? That kind of kills the appeal of SLI right there seeing as it's supposed to be the future and all...

Anyway, looks amazing.

"Where did you hear that?"

Here.

"Interestingly, SLI does appear to function with HDR rendering enabled (we loaded up the SLI real-time graphs to check) but it does not seem to show any meaningful performance increases – at most 5-6% difference. Our Pentium 4 SLI testbed managed to squeeze out a slight performance lead here, but there certainly was no noticeable difference between the speeds of our various platforms."

Did you know that pink algae appears when you set the res to 1280 x 1024? At least it did for me.
It also made one of the combine a bit religious. This only happened one time and was gone after a restart. Thought you guys/gals might be interested.

That was by far the most beautiful thing I have ever seen.

that was pretty sweet

i couldnt use AA or AF though with my 6800GT

so with FEAR pretty much bringing it to its knees, lost coast pwning it, methinks its about time for an upgrade...

Naw, its the same old bug from DOD Source, Perhaps something to do with HDR.

There's something wrong with your setup then...no problems here on a P4 2.8 with that card on 2xAA/4xAF 12X10

Nvidia doesnt work with 6xAA so your basically running 0xaa. gota force 8xAA in your drivers

it would play it, it just felt pretty damn laggy. FRAPS confirmed this, it was dipping to the low 20's

the card is on its way out (its dying) so maybe that has something to do with it. the new card should be here tomarrow (advanced RMA)

edit: it seems the only part it does that in is the very begenning, the rest of the game is fine with 2x4x

I set everything to max, except the res which is limited by my monitor..1280x1024. FSAA to 6x and AF to 16x and I got 30 avg FPS. I think that sucks. I mean what is holding me back? Is it my RAM? Or is the game just that demanding that even a GTX cant handle it?
