I just found out this morning that my main folding rig (don't laugh, but it's the one in my sig) went down. I'm halfway through a month-long business trip, and my wife told me that it keeps crashing. I told her to start up Motherboard Monitor, and it showed a CPU temp of 82C! Sheesh, you can literally fry an egg on that! I told her to turn off folding, and the temperature dropped back down into its more customary 62-63C. But even at that much lower temperature, it is still crashing. I'm going to leave Folding@Home disabled until I get back home and can reinstall (the operating system AND the heatsink), in hopes that it can at least stay a little bit more stable (it's running a web server ATM, which is kinda important).

I guess this current installation of Windows has had a good run--over three years, and all sorts of abuse. When I get home, my first task will be to get nLite to make me a new CD image, and then nuke and reinstall.

62-63C during idle/light duty is way too high... Before you restart F@H, reseat the heatsink with some new paster after cleaning them. I think the old paste might be getting stale.

It hasn't been that long since I last re-did the paste & heatsink. That kind of idle temperature would be high, except that there's no fan blowing onto that heatsink. Passive, baby!

But yeah, I suspect the heatsink isn't sitting on the CPU quite right. And I don't trust my wife to fix it for me. :)
 
Wow if it's passive and at 62C normally I'd be affraid of running F@H. Maybe a good dusting of the heatsink is in order.
 
At this point, I'm pretty sure the random reboots are NOT being caused by heat, as the computer is still having problems, even at the lower temperature. I figure there's a good chance a virus or some sort of malware got on there, so I'll have my wife scan today and see what she comes up with.

It's definitely time for me to nuke that disk and reinstall. *sigh* One more thing to put on my already-pages-long "To do" list...

 
If it crashing via a BSOD before it restarts then try to get the stop code.
You may have to turn off auto-restart in the Advanced System Properties.

My main box has been down all day due to it started to crash to a BSOD.
A quick run of Memtest86+ showed the root cause.
One of my memory sticks was showing up full of errors.
RMA time.
Its always best to run a quick hardware check before you start playing around with the software, just in case.
