Loss of signal with increasing bandwidth

I've got a WRT54G and this Encore ENLWI-N b/g/n network card, and I'm having a very strange problem. I can connect just fine with a great signal because I'm close to the router, but as soon as a I start browsing the Internet or downloading things, my connection speed drops. It starts out at 54 Mbps, and as I browse it'll drop down to ~36-48Mbps, and then if I download anything, it drops down further to 8-18Mbps or lower. My actual speed ends up being a good deal less than the network reports (eg, maxing out at ~200KBps @ 18Mbps). Even stranger, is if I stop browsing or shut down the browser, the reported network speed goes back up to 54Mbps. I'm getting excellent signal too, I don't understand why this is happening.

Any ideas? Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
