Losing Internet Connection When Downloading

Recently I'm losing internet connection when I download torrents and when I download simultaneous files using Jdownloader. Strangely I never lose connection when I download a single file at a time through Hotfile, Megaupload, etc.

I tried limiting my bandwidth and upgrading the firmware on my router, but to no avail. After I lose connection a simple reset of my router and modem brings it back right away. It seems to only happen when I am downloading heavily.

I am running Windows 7 Pro 64 bit and have a Linksys WRT310N Router. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

torrents are known to bring routers to their knees, due to the amount of connections they open.
updated firmware available for the router?

I have the latest dd-wrt firmware. I guess the router is biggest culprit. I'm bummed my router when to shit so quick. Linksys has been good to me forever.

ah, you didn't mention dd-wrt in your OP.
dd-wrt generally fixes issues associated with torrenting.

now when you say you lose internet, do you lose access to the router's webgui? can you still ping the router, just nothing on the internet?

I am able to get into the router's webgui, but not sure how to ping my router. I seem to just lose internet connection. All the other computers on my network lose connection also until the reset.

if you can get into the webgui, then you would successfully ping it.

in that case, I would take a look at the lights on the modem before rebooting it. It's possible something with the modem itself is going wonky, and it may be completely unrelated to the router.

I just checked when my connection was lost and the send light stops blinking. The receive and ethernet lights stay on so is this a modem problem?

sounds like it to me.
I would give your ISP a call and have them take a look at the modem stats

could be your ISP is throttling you / killing your connection for P2P content, wouldn't be surprising.

how many torrents do you have going at once when this happens?

try it with 1 running, then 2 and so on.

Ummm, the key might be the word "torrents". The ISP, especially AT&T will shut you down if they find you connecting to illegal torrents. Worth checking out. I have seen them shut down a service every hour, on the hour, for torrent users. Couldn't figure it out at all. Even with service calls. Then the torrents were stopped and the service returned to normal.
