i know you never get exactly what is advertised with hdd spacebut this is a bit much.. i just got a 160gig wd drive and its only 125gigs. ive lost a few gigs before but never 35..

seems a little excessive.... I think my 160gig was more like 150 ... no partitions splitting the size? defragged, formated, etc... if it is still that small try a program like sandrasoft and see what it comes up with... if nothing seems to get back a little space go with the take back... good luck...

What OS are you running?

The culprit is most likely the hard drive limitation in Windows because of 28-bit LBA that limites you to 137 GB drives.

Once you let us know the OS, I can help.

yeah...the older versions of windows like 9x have a limit around 130gb, i think

If you're not running Service Pack 3, win 2k will not see the rest of the 160 gig drive beyond 137 GB.

128GB Binary as reported by Windows

ok im using sp4 now but theres no change, still 127gb. is there anything i hae to do to be able to use the rest?

make sure the mobo BIOS supports 48bit LBA

Requirements to break the 137GB (128GB Binary) Barrier

there are other less attractive alternatives
where are you reading this 127GB?

Go To > Start > Run > (type) diskmgmt.msc
what is the drive capacity listed?
the partition takes up all of it? or is there any unallocated space?
if so RClick > Partition & format it

ive noticed one thing that might be of importance here. in the requirements for the iaa it doesnt list my controller (82801EB Ultra ATA etc etc. ) could this be the problem? :/

When you originally created the partition on your hardrive the OS was not using 48-bit LBA. Thus it created the maximum partition size that is possible using 28-bit LBA. Installing SP3 does bring in 48-bit LBA support. However, this does not change the fact the partition was only 128GB when originally created, enabling 48-bit LBA will not magically resize the partition to include to rest of the drive's space. You need to use a partitioning tool such as Partition Magic to expand the size of the partition to include the new space.

All of the steps to do this are outlined here: http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=651016
