Losing HDD space..Please Help!

Ok, So all of sudden on my 250GB drive, i have about 230 GB on it, and one day, I realize i have more space...I didnt do anything, I just have more space. Next day, I realize as Im gonna format the drive (backing up the stuff to different comps) that as im deleteing stuff, the free stuff remains constant @ around 400MB. Now, on C, I put backup files from D onto this drive, and their gone! and Im reading 2GB free (of 80)but when I right click all the folders, and go to properties, it only reads 18GB. Please help! whats going on with my drives!
 
If you have XP, the System Restore feature will take up to 12% of the hard drive space. The Recycle Bin takes up 10% by default. That's nearly a 1/4 of the drive.
