Losing Data on HDDs

I recently plugged in three WD black 1TB HDD that had not been connected to a computer for about 12 months.

All of them showed high usage (800GB or so), but two of the three mounted only an empty directory.

The third drive showed a partial file system, and when I clicked on a music file or picture they said bad file format.

Thankfully I had 90% of the data on my live machine, and that machine is now backed up to a ZFS box. But I thought I had 4+ copies of the data, not 2..

What sort of error or corruption could have caused this?

Could be UREs, could be a virus. You can check the first by looking at the SMART raw data using a program like CrystalDiskInfo.
