Looking to upgrade

I am looking to upgrade from the system in my sig, I am looking for the most bang for the buck not a bleeding edge system. The Egg has a combo with a Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UDH and a 3570k for $380. I am not into extreme overclocking and would be happy to reach a stable and reasonably cool 4.5. I am a gamer. My future upgrade path is to add an SSD in the spring, up the ram to 32gb when I catch a good sale and a new GPU next fall....most likely a 680. I won't be looking at upgrading the board and cpu for at least three more years. Anyone got any thoughts?

Well that's a solid CPU/Mobo, not sure how much of a "deal" it is, but the hardware is good. That said, don't go into it thinking 4.5GHz is going to be easy, guaranteed, or even achievable. If you had a scatter plot for IB overclockability, the dots would be all over the place.

BTW, why 32GB? Are you doing a lot of virtualization? If you don't need it, don't buy it. All it's going to do is cost more, suck more power, and put more strain on the IMC which could impede overclocking. Now if you do need it, then obviously, go for it.

As for the GPU, also consider a 670 on a 680 PCB. Those can almost always OC to 680+ speeds and are cheaper. It's the route I would have went if they were available at the time I bought my 680. I say "almost always" as more of a disclaimer, I haven't actually heard of one that doens't get to 680 speeds yet.

You're right, 4.5 is not a given, if I get to 4.4 I won't be terribly dissappointed. I'm just gaming so most likely I'll be just fine with the ram I have...but they are selling 32 gig kits so cheap now that I get tempted. I also figure that this time next year there might be some decent sales on the 680's.

I almost went with 32GB for the same reason, but didn't for the reasons I mentioned. If you aren't using it, it's hurting more than it's helping. Take that money and put it towards a good HSF.

Go for it, even @ 4.3 or 4.4 a 3570k will be a nice upgrade.

I got mine to do 4.6GHz on air in a 95usd mobo. It's now 90usd.

I'm using a single OCed HD 7950 so I wasn't concerned about only
having one PCI-e 16x slot.

I'm using an 8Gb 2133 Ripjaw ram kit with it. (2x4Gb)

I've my ram set @ 2133 9-11-10-29 1T tRC 41 1.63v.

I'm very happy with what I have.

Thanks for the input, I ordered the Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UDH/3570k combo from the egg and it will be here tomorrow. I plan on using the 16Gb of ram I already have as it should be more than enough, but a 500Gb class ssd is the next order of bussiness. No rush though, I'll strike when a good sale comes along.
