well I am a current AMD user and I just upgraded my 2200+ to a 2500+ thats going to oc at a 3200+

I was thinking though about 64 bit and I know a few of my friends are going to upgrade when Intel / pentium comes out with it...... just curious what you Intel guys would say.....

I also run a lan party, I try to keep all the servers with the same stuff and I also "donate" the computer i just upgraded to the lan... so basicly, when ever I upgrade my main desktop, every lan server get's changed and i end up with motherboards nd processors I make new computers with :p

^^ if its going to change anything....

(identical thread in the AMD forum....)

Why... 64 bit windows is highly overpriced buggy and wont be cost affective for atleast a year and by that time intel will have a 64 bit processor that will most likely really rival AMD.... Although if your on a limited budget sure why not.... I would rather have a amd xp and oc or get a 3200+ and a good vid card ram etc, but whateva floats your boat and if you ask about my name I thought if it from my first true windows operating computer which was an amd :p

Soooo do what you want its your money and if you have enough sure why not and 64 bits arent too good at oc right now.

sorry - maybe i didnt make myself clear.... my recent upgrade was from a Athlon XP to a athlon XP - i have yet to go into 64 bit yet.... just thinkin about it.... you're thoughts are mine exactly.....

I've been with amd ever sense I started building computers ;)

Why do you care what other people think about your computer?

I have never understood this

Get what YOU want to get, fairly simple

If you're looking for help on WHAT to get, then thats a different story

I'm trying to figure out if buying 64 bit right now, if i dont eactly need it now - is a waste of time / money / effort.....

I wouldnt just yet, wait tell january... price drops and you dont need it yet with your processors speed. Its just not manditory yet. Save money buy nice ram and a graphics card save up a lil long get a amd 64 3000+ later.

Just MYopinion, if you are thinking of upgradeing the computer REGARDLESS I say you might as well go 64, thats what I am doing. I dont want to build now and build in a year and a half when 64 bit is really taken advantage of. So for a few months I'll have a CPU that cant be used to its full potential, but I wont be upgrading anytime soon.

So basically if your gunna upgrade the computer no matter what, than go 64, if your only upgradeing to get 64, hold off, its not like that current computer is bad.

EDIT: I just read your 3rd post.... dont bother yet.

If you do not need it right now - it's a waste of time and money. If you bought a AMD64 cpu a month ago it is probably $50 cheaper now. A year from now the same $200 - $400 will probably buy you a much faster chip than it can now. I usually tell people to upgrade when a cpu comes out that is twice as fast as what you presently have. I went from a 1.5 to a 3.0. Why? because the 775 just came in and i want to get a Northwoody before they become hard to get. But you couldn't give me a 3.0 775.

Basically Linux will do 64 bit - but like WXP64 there are few 64 bit apps. Wait a year. A year from now you'll be able to buy a 754 3000 for about $100. Everything will be running 939 by then. By then the 939 will be running 1066MHz mem.

If you need to upgrade (from say the kt200, kt266), now is the time. But if you do not need to upgrade (amd xp), then wait a year. always upgrade before Nov. 1 or after Jan 1. May and October seem to be the sweetspots as that is when new vid cards usually come out. This is usually a few weeks after new cpus come out.
