Currently i'm running some old altec lansing mx5021 hooked up to the onboard sound. Lately over the course of several months a hissing has developed. I tried replacing the speaker cables and the connector from the computer to the sub and it still hisses. I am building a new computer and was wondering what "budget" is a good value. I was thinking about 200ish but am willing to go up a little if its "worth it". Should i just get speakers? swans? audyssey? a5?
 
I would go for A2s with around 200, small size, great sound. I've been hearing a lot about the Audyssey's and comparisons to the A2, but I haven't heard them for myself.
 
At $200 the A2s are great.
AV-40s are $115 a pair on Amazon atm. Might not sound as good as the A2s but you are saving $85.
If you want a sub included Newegg has the Corsair SP2500s for $275 shipped. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16836852001 As far as "computer grade" speaker packages they appear to be good.

Might also want to check out the KRK Rokit line.
 
my budget was originally 200 (plus maybe a little more) but since i budgeted 1500 to my new build, and i just saved some money by switching to geico (aka bought a crucial m4 on amazon), I am willing to spend more. Because this is not my main rig (i have a home theater rig and a dedicated 2.0 rig) I dont want to spend toooooo much, but value is key.

SithSolo, one of my good friends owns a set of KRK and i liked them a lot, but they were ever so slightly bass heavy and were more musically inclined towards hip hop (which i do listen to) but was leaning towards something more neutral........maybe haha

The AV40s sound better than the A2's to most ears the biggest reason people buy them is that they don't have the room for av40's.

Performance/size is where the A2's outpace the AV40's.

What the OP wants is the promedia 2.1 setup.
 
I've owned the promedia 2.1's before and did not really like them, sounded too harsh. I know i'm being nitpicky, especially at this pricepoint, just wanted to see what else was out there

How was the bass quantity? Did you find it to be too over powering? Just enough? Too little?
 
the bass quantity i thought was good (if even a little too much which is ok with me) but the quality of the bass was not so great, a little distorted (from what i remember)
