What do you guys think of jumping from my current card to something like this:

I'm looking to get another 1-2 years out of this rig (going to donate to my wife) so I'm hoping this graphics card will do the trick. Some folks at another site said 2gb was the way to go, but is it really necessary? Highest res this will be used at will be 1920 x 1200 on a 24-27" monitor.

Other cards I've considered are as such, but not sure about the difference in performance to the 6970:

As far as the amount of ram, 1GB is a limitation already at 1680x1050 in battlefield 3 (have to turn MSAA off). BF3 is pretty demanding though, but for future titles it will likely be a limitation.

Personally I'd be waiting until the 31st when the HD7950 will be released. Its probably going to be $450 so I don't know if your budget will stretch that far, but it could have a downward effect on the 6970's pricing (hopefully). Either way, if you can wait it may be worth it.

I'd go 2GB minimum, at least if you want to hold on to the card for a year or two. If you go 6950 try get one which has the best chances of unlocking to the 6970 etc. I haven't followed that but I think some might be preferable over others (and a dual bios switch).

Wasn't aware of the impending 7950 release, I really appreciate the info. I have no problem waiting, and either stretching budget for that, or more likely, picking up a discounted 6970 at that time :D
 
Definitely go 2GB at least. With no MSAA, I'm using all 1GB with my GTX 460 @ 1920x1080.
