I'm looking to upgrade my firewall as I'm running a smoothwall right now and I dont want to run a open source here at work. I would like to get a hardware firewall as I'm new to networking I really dont know what one to get. Is it true that hardware is better then software?
Thanks for your time,

What is it you're running at work now?
How large is your network?
How big is the internet pipe?
Do you have any VPN needs?
What do you wish for the firewall to do? Any UTM features?
What is your budget?

I've been switching my clients networks over to UTM appliances instead of plain old NAT routers. The benefits from having additional antivirus/antispyware scanning, and SPAM removal, are important IMO. I've been using Untangle. Yes it's open sourced for the basic package, but they also have professional "paid for" packages that gain you support.

Why dont you want to run opensource? Arguably that is the best kind of security.

Dont forget Smoothwall, Endian, Untangle, etc. all have corporate versions as well. You really will not gain anything besides support by going non-opensource.

What is it you're running at work now? Smoothwall express 2.0
How large is your network? About 50 workstations
How big is the internet pipe? I'm sorry I'm new to this are you talking about my connection? If so I'm running fiber from the DMCI Broadband
Do you have any VPN needs? I have about 4 that VPN in
What do you wish for the firewall to do? Any UTM features? Keep track of all attacks, internet activity ect. Any UTM features I'm sorry what is UTM?
What is your budget? 1000.00-1500.00
Why dont you want to run opensource? My Boss dont like it

Dont get me wrong the smoothwall is doing a good job but my boss dont think its that save being open source. 1 more stupid noob question. I can see all the attacks on the outside but how can I see if someone has gotten through or is there not a way?

Thanks for your time

UTM = Unified Threat Management.
It adds features like antivirus scanning at the gateway of traffic, as well as SPAM removal for mail, and much deeper packet inspection. You get the benefit of an additional layer of scanning of threats, in addition to the antivirus package on your servers/workstations.

I encourage you to look at www.untangle.com. They do have a full professional package and options that you pay for and get support (good fast support BTW)....so you can walk your boss off of the edge of the cliff when it comes to his feeling about opensource being inferior and not supported.
