Hey yall, pretty new to [H] forum, posting wise at least.

I am waiting to receive my components for my new build. I'm currently on an IPS Dell 2007wfp that I've had since 2006. I love that monitor, never had ANY issues, 3 year warranty turned out to be a gimmick in my case!

Max res. on the monitor is 1680x1050, and with a new 5850, it has become the limiting factor for getting full potential from my new rig.

This is basically what I'm after:

primary: Good for HD Movies/Shows
(very close) Secondary: Good for 16:10 gaming; PS3 Compatible (good scaling)

I am coming from a great IPS and i'm worried I will notice the difference if I settle on a TN, but I just dropped so much money on my build it's hard for me to pull the trigger for a u2410. Besides, I hear it's riddled with issues.

Any suggestions guys? Would a TN panel be such a bad choice?

All I read about are people going from an IPS to a TN and hating it. You may be the exception. I have only ever owned a TN monitor. If your heavily into gaming you could go a 120hz TN route.

Like the Acer 120hz 24" (1920x1080) $400

or an IPS like the
HP ZR24W 24" 1920x1200 / 16:10 / 10ms input lag $400

or the u2410 from the Dell outlet for $400

either way your going to drop around $400+

The HP ZR24w is a bit cheaper than U2410 (but still IPS) and has standard gamut (meaning no fuzz with color conversion and that it will match the 2007wfp better if you use both).

Whether a TN will suffice in your case is hard to say. Problem is that the larger the monitor the more apparent the flaws get.

Most people have no problem with TN. Then again, most people haven't even seen anything better and are clueless about panels and quality displays.

In contrast to IPS displays there is no shortage of TN displays in stores. So I'd suggest that you browse local stores and see whether you are bothered by TN panels. (stores are not an ideal environment to 'test' monitors but what can you do).

Thanks for the input.

Yeah monitor comparing at frys---wasn't SO bad, i mean, I could tell a difference but I'm not sure if that difference is worth 200$. They had no IPS's to do anything close to side-by-side comparisons..

I'm really thiking of just going for the u2410 from the outlet...have 21 days to see how it is too..

Problem with the ZR24W is that it doesnt scale properly with a ps3 connected.

I upgraded from a 2007wfp to 3008. Would you go to a 17 inch widescreen?

If not, then perhaps you should consider that 24" is underwhelming in size when compared to a 20". Go for a 30.

Even then, you'll still wish it was bigger after a week. This is your window to the world for years to come.

The 23" 1920x1080 screen you linked is nearly the same vertical size/resolution of the monitor you have.

If you feel sad and depressed (I did) about constantly leaning forward to get closer to your current monitor, that 23" is only slightly wider than what you have. Slightly. If you're considering a 1080p monitor, is there any reason you're not looking at TVs? You already have the 2007wfp for reading text.

thanks BMW

hmm, well at one point I had considered the Hanns G 28" and using my 2007 in portrait mode next to it..

however, I don't know about the quality of such a large sized TN panel. I is 1920x1200, but for HD watching? eh. The Samsung has some good HDTV monitor hybrids but I hear they suck for games. Never noticed any ghosting on my 2007, and wouldn't want to start now. Believe me I'd much rather go with a 27" but it is the cost that's stopping me. If i got anything that big it definitely could not be an IPS..

any input?
