I have an eVGA 460 768mb, and for the most part, I love it. It is INCREDIBLY quiet. My 280, 460, and 5850 are all whisper quiet, at idle and load. This is something I do not want to lose or sacrifice with a replacement card. Every once in a while I run into an issue when playing videos, where the screen will turn black and then the video will either freeze, or continue playing full screen, behind what may have launched the video (say a browser). Kind of annoying. I have gone through a number of driver versions now, and left behind the total driver failure/restart (though it appears very similar). At any rate, I'll be listing this card on ebay or the forums here at some point along with my BFG 280 OC.
Why not throw the 280 in its place? It's a little warmer than what I prefer, and doesn't have every feature I desire these days.
I have considered placing my 5850 in the machine (Tiberium in signature), and getting a new card for my other machine (Big Blue, also in sig). But I am content with the performance of the 5850, and would rather make a substantial leap, but at a lower cost than what would seem worthwhile to me. The kind of leap I am thinking is GeForce 670 and above, and that is above my budget.
Now that I am past all of the backstory, I am mainly eyeing the Radeon side of GPUs because they are better suited for the work I do in Linux. I will still consider an Nvidia card, I am not hugely biased, as this is mainly for my backup machine, and I won't be depending on it for daily, crucial tasks. I just ask that any suggestions be 95% focused on ATI/AMD cards.
I am wary of used cards, especially after the bitcoin madness. Or I would just leap on another 5850.
I am mainly looking at 5850, 5870, 6850, 6870, 7770, and 6950. The card could end up in either machine I own, the more powerful one making it into Big Blue, rather than Tiberium. Tiberium runs at 1680x1050 using DVI. Big Blue runs 1080p DVI (could use HDMI), with a 1050 using DVI, and occasionally another 1050 using DVI through a DP adaptor when my work demands it (VMs are fun
). So my choices, at least regarding Big Blue, have limitations because of my monitor ports.
I want to keep it under $200, but that is really pushing it. I would much prefer $150 and under. Should I just leap on the 7770 and call it a day? I am just looking for some outside opinions to help me hone in on what would be best for me. I really appreciate all of the help.
