Hello all,

Long time lurker here, recently joined forum member. I am in desperate need of a hobby and this looks fun. After hours of pouring through the information here I seem to still be at a complete loss as to what kind of rig setup I should look for as a beginner. I currently have free power, and will for the next 3-4 years so I figure I ought to put that to use.

Any suggestions on what I might pick up that is a good price to value prospect and usable for a total novice?

Sorry if this question is asked all the time, I promise I really did try to find the answer before asking.

Thanks,

-rational

jump on IRC, we can help you spend that money ;)

if you haven't used IRC before, go to http://webchat.freenode.net fill in a nickname, then use "#hardfolding" as the channel. put in the silly captcha and click connect.

if no one answers the first time, try again, people are more than willing to tell others how to spend their money!

I will hop on IRC tomorrow it is a bit late tonight (3 am here).

I have no idea what a reasonable budget even is, lets say ~300 USD to start with, is that enough to make a worthwhile contribution?

Is that for the whole computer? Or just one part such as a GPU?

If thats for the whole thing then I would say wait until the new AMD APUs are out then build a rig using one of them. Then add extra GPUs as you want.

GPUs get the most science done.

For $300 you'd probably be best off buying a 7970 and adding it to the machine in your sig. That would get you in the neighborhood of 90k-110k Points Per Day depending on overclock, which is a pretty nice amount, and it should be very simple to get it up and folding.

hrm I have a 7870 myst I can devote to the task once I upgrade. I guess I was under the impressions servers were the best way to go. If it is similar to crytocurrency I can probably piece together something.

*edit* we have about 10 computers at work sitting in a corner, I will take stock of what is available for extended borrowing from there.

the big 4P systems are huge point makers, but expensive

let's try and melt what you already have first

Bodega (COpowpow in IRC) will soon be selling an F Socket 4P. Its good for near 170kish PPD. It's also a good first machine imo and he's a good guy to buy from (I just dealt with him myself). I also believe his price is within your budget.

It's low cost but a fairly big point maker.
It won't suck down an enourmous amount of power
It will allow you to fold BigAdv
It will allow you to get your feet wet with Linux folding
Due to its low cost, if you decide in a month this isn't for you, you wont be out a ton of money

These reasons and more are why I nearly always recommend an F socket. It's what I started on and shit, most who have started folding in the past 6 months have started folding on. Now if you have a good $1000 you're looking to spend, you could easily pick up a G34 4P around here.

Hop in IRC and we can chat more and or show you WHY you need to jump right in with a 4p =D

G34 or bust. You can start with octo cores and then work up from them.

I have some gear I may sell or part with dirt cheap depending on budget.

I am in fact selling my D7000's however likely in Europe due to the lack of availability of them here.

That is right about at my budget, I also prefer to not run GPUs because I live in a 225 sq ft room due to the jacked up housing situation here, and I imagine GPU fans might perturb my sleep schedule.

I will hop on IRC tomorrow it is almost 4 am and I really ought to be sleeping but I get these crazy ideas and spend countless hours reading things. Also going to look up G34 now.

Thanks for the warm welcome and responses, it is greatly appreciated.

Hmm, well i am paying for shipping so if you are interested in selling to me, please toss me a private message.

I started out with a 4P socket F unit and thanks to the guys here, got it up and running and got the "bug". :) Quickly added a second 4P system, G34 this time... One never seems enough....
