My company has a Windows 2003 server with only 16 client access licenses. There are always around 15-16 users on the server at a time, and so it is a giant pain in the ass when Windows says we're not allowed to connect without adding more licenses.
I convinced the CFO to approve the purchase of a new Linux server that'll take care of the licensing issue. However, I'm having a hard time finding one that fits our needs. I want to be able to run Gentoo on it. It will basically be used for sharing files for about 50 users or so. I want to have different shared folders that different security groups can have access to, and then have a security groups that have read/write access to some or all folders. How easy is it to do this with Gentoo? I use Gentoo on my laptop, but have never implemented this in a server environment.
On the hardware side, I just need 250GB or so of RAID1 storage, 1GB of ram, and any decent processor. This server won't be doing much more than serving files. Redundancy is key. I would also like tape backup, if possible, however I don't know how easy it is to implement in linux. Do you guys have any suggestions as to where I can order a server that meets these specs for a reasonable cost? Everywhere I've quoted has been upwards of $5k-10k. Any suggestions will be helpful.
