hello! i have a pair of m-audio av40s and i'm very happy with the setup, but i think i want to add a little bass err... a sub-woofer. what would pair up well with these speakers? i don't want to spend more than 100 ~ 120 dollars, but i'm willing to go over budget if it's justified.
any advice?

I was just about to post the same question. :D Would it really even be worth it?

In that price range, if you are looking for quality, you are pretty much limited to a Dayton. I believe a few models have been designed by Dr. Hsu, who makes the highly coveted line of HSU subwoofers.

Try the Dayton SUB-100 HT at $130.00:

If you are looking for a used subwoofer, that might change things. I would try to save to at least $200 to open up some more options.

Velodyne........VX-11.......$150.00 (not sure, on sale at Amazon)

AV123...........X-sub........$200.00ish (my second pick)

BIC...............H-100........$240.00 (my third pick, best bang for the buck)

HSU..............VTF-1.......$300.00 (my first pick, most musical)

eD................A2-300.......$350.00 (the most output)

Energy...........ESW-8......$150.00 (not sure)

Acculine..........A-sub.......$240.00 (not sure)

Oh, and if you can save $475.00, then go with the SVS 10 inch, the PB10NSD I believe is the model. That would really put you into the next tier of quality.

Beyond that price point, there are plenty of options depending on your needs.

i used to run a pair of yamaha bookshelf speakers with a 12 inch passive sub i picked up from raidoshack. i had it hooked into a sony stereo 100 watt amp. it was really kick ass. so if your looking for something to pick up on the cheap, look for a passive sub, if your amp is up to it.

money is not a huge issue, but i don't want to spend more than i initially stated. plus, this is going to be hooked upto my computer in a semi-small room.
anyway, i'll start checking out your recommendations. thanks for the suggestions CJRP.

by the way, my speakers are self powered. will that at all complicate things when connecting a sub? i will not be getting an amp.

Wont be an issue, there have been many threads about hooking up a powered sub to powered speakers. Do a search and you will find there are a couple of guides out there that will make the connections super easy..

You can't be serious. :D

The Bic F12 should be in your price range, amazon and other places usually have them for around $170ish or so. 99% identical performance to the Acoustech H100 but not as good-looking. Any of the Daytons subwoofers would be fine too, I would stay away from low-end Sony and Polk Audio subwoofers.

i agree with this dude if you want a good quality subwoofer i suggest you dish out another benjamin you wont regret it ;)

What do people think about the Klipsch KSW-10?

I've seen those on sale for like $100 before, considered buying one but didn't.

You're spending almost as much on a sub as on speakers.

Generally, you do not want to do that. I'd save up for speakers that do a better job full range than start adding complexity to the system that likely won't blend well.

I'd consider the BIC America Venturi V1020. $140 shipped, should be good.

I bought the Dayton Elite 10" subwoofer, built and designed by HSU for $180. They discontinued it after only having it available for ~6 months. I think it was just a VTF-1 with a bit smaller amp (150w). Anyhow, the regular Dayton subs should be good too. I have the BR-1 bookshelf speakers and the quality seems pretty good for the price.
