Its a simple a probably dumb question, but will frame rate affect my ability to play in 3d? Do I have to be able to play at 120fps for smooth 3d? Just wanting to see what my performance would be before i drop the cash on monitor an 3d vision kit.

I have a single 480gtx and i7 960 if that means anything.

what are the rest of your system specs? and at what resolution. No you don't have to have have 120fps, but you have to have some serous performance because 3d just about halves your FPS (you pretty well have to render each frame twice.

I assume you do have a 3d monitor though (it does have to be 120hz)

looking into buying a 1920x1080 monitor. its an Alienware aurora system. 480gtx, i7 960, 6gb ddr3 1333 ram. all at stock clocks.

you will be able to play it. in fact that is a good setup to do so. you may have to drop some visual settings down in a few games but otherwise your fine.

What frame rate per second you need for 3D really is up to personal choice and comes down to what one feels is 'smooth' per say. Generally speaking, 3D renders two frames. One frame for your left eye and one frame frame for your right eye which is what simulates 3D or gives you the 3D effect.

Some gamers feel perfectly comfortable gaming at 30fps. Especially pretty much any gamer who plays on a console. After all, consoles rarely truely do over 30 fps and often at low resolutions. When games do go over that 30 fps threshold, there's usually a noticeable decrease in graphics quality for that title.

If 30fps feels smooth, then in theory 60 fps in 3D should feel equally-smooth since you'd be experiencing 30 fps for each eye. If you prefer up in the 45 fps to feel its smooth, you'd need to generate 90 fps to achieve the same smoothness in 3D. IE You basically need to decide what is smooth for you and then choosing a level of detail that will give you that amount of fps. Generally, with a single gard IE a single GTX480 to achieve 90 fps in most games, you would need to completely turn off AA and go towards a medium-high graphics settings. In that case, you need to ask yourself, 'What will improve my image quality more? 3D or higher detail settings and 2-4xAA?' or am I willing to increase my PC cost by another $400.00 to add a second GTX480?
