With prices video cards have come down I am looking at upgrading mine currently running a Gateway computer with the following

AMD 9600 Phenom
4 Gigs DDR2
VisionTek 3870

I run at 1600x1050 in most games (play WoW a bunch) and have been noticing some low fps and lag when a lot of effects are going on. The question is at the resolution I am running should I go with 4850, or spend for the upgrade and get the 4870?
 
for wow a 4850 is fine. and you didn't say what kind of motherboard you had. if its a crossfire a 4850 would leave you a nice upgrade path. A regular 4870 would be nice but a little harder to justify.
 
I'm a tad surprised you're maxed out with that 3870 and the Phenom but I know the latest patch kicked things up a notch. You're in the classic in between spot. Yes the 4850 would help but its not a huge leap from your 3870 IMO. The GTX260 is a leap but then you're talking extra $$. Then if you commit to the extra $$ why not the 4870? At some point you just have to bite the bullet and agree on how much you move forward and how much you spend.
