Wondering if anybody had any recommendations. I am looking to get two 1080p projectors to run in eyefinity for my flight sim games.

My biggest concern is heat, as I have one Sanyo Z4 720p projector that just pours out the heat. I know projectors run hot, but I am looking for the coolest possible ones with the most bells and whistles for the best bang for the buck.

Any recommendations? Thanks!

Do you like spinning wheel or LCD projector? Can you see rainbow?

I think Im ok with spinning wheel, I used to have an Infocus 4805 (http://www.projectorcentral.com/infocus_screenplay_4805.htm) and never had a problem with rainbows with that.

I then stepped up to the Sanyo Z4, which was much sharper than the Infocus, but the infocus had better colors and was brighter, which I liked. The Z4 is just too dim for my tastes.

Basically, I think I would like DLP better, so the wheel would have to be better than the infocus 4805, which was not all that great of a wheel I have been told....so I should be ok with the wheels.

Are the flight sims you're talking about capable of using a strange output shape like that? None of the racing sims or titles like Arma II offered anything like that for me. Although I didn't try to dig around in .ini files to do it manually.

What I'm doing now is cropping off the top and bottom sections of a 1080p screen to make the projected image extra wide which allows for a higher FOV. With some antialiasing I actually think it's more than usable even on 720p projectors. Other benefits are performance and cost, it's a lot simpler and easier to go with a single screen.

Though I understand in a flight sim you're looking at smaller objects than what I see on a racetrack or on foot, so there's probably some benefits to a higher resolution..

Well, I am currently running three dell U2410 1920x1200 monitors in eyefinity at 6048x1200 resolution (w/ bezel correction), so I would assume that two projectors would work?

I play Over Flanders Fields, Rise of Flight and Wings of Prey and have not had any issues with the three dells and I believe you can do two monitors right? I will have to disable the third monitor and test double screen eyefinity.

UPDATE:
I disabled my triple monitor group and created a display group with only two of my Dell U2410s and was able to play Rise of Flight perfectly in eyefinity with only two monitors....well as perfectly as one can play with the bezel down the middle, lol. But this is very promising! With two projectors you can get the wideness benefit of eyefinity without the fisheye effect because its not too wide and no bezels! I just gotta figure out which monitors are the coolest so I don't turn my game room into an oven.

OP you may want to do some research, and start a thread in this projector subforum: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?f=68

Edit: never mind i can see you posted a thread there already ;)

Keep an eye on Epson 1080P projector(s), good reviews for a budget projector.

Thanks Sjetski, but that epson is a bit pricey and I would need two of em

Take a look at this baby! I am thinkin this is gonna be my huckleberry!

Never seen that one, 1280x768 makes it more PC friendly than 1280x720P, which leads me to this next quote:

1280 x 768 HD Native Resolution
Thought you wanted native 1920x1080P ? Unless you've changed your mind?

But otherwise yes, native 1080P projectors are going to cost at least a grand each.

I may have been confused in my last post, i may have been thinking of the one optoma 1080P which goes for around a grand or so.

Edit: checkout Optoma HD20 prices here: http://www.bing.com/shopping/search?q=optoma+hd20&mkt=en-US&FORM=BPFD ($853)

I did want native 1080p, but the tech is just not there for my use. I am moving into a bigger place and gettin a mancave 12'x12' room all to myself, away from the woman. Looking more and more at the 1080p projectors I am seeing nothing but massive amounts of heat and expensive bulbs to replace every 3,000-5,000 hours. Yea, these are only 1280x768 native, but they apparently upscale to 1080p and look good doing it! Also, these are LED with a lifetime eta of 30,000 hours and they are the size of a freaking dollar! I am gettin two now and if I ever wanna go bigger resolution, I will just grab some more of em or simply play on my dell U2410s.

I mean look at these babies in action!

Gotcha, makes sense, especially with your heat requirements. 30,000 hours is just insane.

That projector would actually downscale 1080p content to 768P btw, not the other way around. Still a useful capability to have though.

Ah, I was wondering how they would handle the 1080p, makes sense. No worries a 2560x768 resolution will allow me to max out the eyecandy for some of those games that the 5870 cant handle at 6048x1200 (yea Im lookin at you crysis), plus it will really make planes nice and life like in my sims. This gives me the best of both worlds for my mancave so I am happy!

Well if you bite on this please post impressions either here or over at AVS, I'm personally really skeptical about the quality on this projector but I'd love to be wrong.

Also since you're going to be gaming you should be aware that as rule with projectors if you feed it a non native resolution source it starts to introduce input lag, the more work the scaler has to do the worse it gets.

There are no "real" reviews of this anywhere on the net so good luck.

Damn, I may have to get one of these instead of an HDTV for my living room. :D

$500 each @ 1280 X 768 resolution each.

Two of them alone is not worth it.
2560x768 doesn't even beat a single 30" monitor 2560x1600. and both solutions cost a grand.

5 of them costs 2.5k. Run them in portrait and you get a resolution of 3840x1280. Which isn't even better than 3x24" monitors at a resolution of 3600x1920 and a cost of $1500 for 3x dell u2410s. I guess the primary advantage to the projectors would be the lack of bezels. But it would cost you, and we're not even accounting for the cost of a projection surface.

I received these and set them up in my living room and the verdict is:

"GOOD GOD THESE ARE FAWKING TERRIBLE!!!"

I would go on and elaborate, but that would be a waste of your time and mine. Ill just put the bulletins up:

(1) Contrast is GOD AWFUL, I never realized how spoiled I am with my U2410 monitors and my old Z4 projector, but I am. Even at the best focus the text was very fuzzy to read.

(2) Color reproduction was Awful and the horrific black levels made me want to die. I had a headache in five minutes.

(3) There is a 15% restocking fee, which totals $150. I have asked customer support in an email to wave the fee so I will have to wait and see how expensive this terrible experiment turns out to be. If they bang me on the fee, I will never buy their products again and make it a mission to make sure nobody else does either. I will keep you posted on this.

Basically, the LED tech is a far way from being ready. The contrast, color, and brightness ratios need to come way, way up before the tech is doable.

And for the seam argument...well you would not be able to hide it with these projectors, I will tell you that right now. Even though both had the same exact settings, their colors were off from each other and there was a very, very, noticeable difference.

UPDATE:
Yep, they are going to waive the restocking fee. A classy company indeed and when the tech improves I will buy from them again.

Yeah... not too surprising. You get what you pay for. At least you didn't have to pay the restocking fee. But I bet you do have to pay for the shipping.
