My 80GB BW PS3 is getting a bit old now and im going to Replace my Thermal. I have already taken it apart and cleaned everything to the Max. it was already pretty much clean since I dust everyday.

I know that New Thermal comes out all the time expecially since the PS3 has been released. Im looking for really good stuff that has proven to drop temps a bit.

Thanks

as5 is still good, though iirc its conductive

if not that i would get tx-2

Incorrect, AS5 is slightly capacitive, so just keep it off stuff that shouldn't have it anyways.

After my tube of AS5 got used up, I switched to Arctic Cooling MX-2 and MX-3 (depending on application, as MX-3 is slightly thicker). Spreads easier than AS5, slightly better heat transfer, and same price. Nothing wrong with AS5 if you have some kicking around though.

I haven't seen any pics of the insides of a PS3, so I don't know if you need thermal gap pad on any components or not, or if you can get away with just using paste.

i am using AS5, i bought 2 12g tubes over a year ago and am barely half way on either, i use one at work and one at home.

It's not gonna matter much for PS3. Just about anything will be better than the dried, cracked, misapplied stuff you took off. For something safe go with MX-2 or arctic ceramique (cools slightly worse).

I bought a "broken" PS3 with a bad BD drive. I fixed it up (turned out to be an ornament hook caught on the magnetic spindle), lapped the heatsinks and applied AS-5. It YLOD on me 18 months after the fix. If its going to fail, its going to do it no matter what.

I firmly believe its this ROHS/non-lead sold issues at hand. BTW, when I did the "autopsy" to apply heat to it - my fins were clean, so to conclude, I doubt my issue was heat. Yeah, heat gun and baking it didn't fix my PS3.

Look at the Temps page of the linked shootout. Excluding cheese, the absolute worst temperature and the absolute best (regardless of age) are 1.7°C apart at idle (27.5° - 29.2°) and 3.1°C apart at load (36.5° - 39.6°). Even overclocked, you're looking at 3.9°C (43.1° - 47.0°). While we all want the best temps possible, you're more likely to have bigger variations from incorrectly mounting the heatsink or applying the paste.
